The beginning of the popularity of Bored Ape
The popularity of Bored Apes began when the Bored Ape Yacht Club, an official partner who uploaded lots of pictures of bored-faced chimpanzees,
They display their works in Miami, a city in southern Florida, which has become a crypto center after various art gimmicks are sold in that city.
Now, while the Bored Ape Yacht Club offers a variety of exciting works of art from a monkey, the Bored Ape NFT has started to be traded since spring 2021 for 190 USD and is gaining significant popularity among NFT enthusiasts around the world.
Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) have taken the crypto market by storm over recent years.
By most metrics, Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) is the most successful NFT art collection. BAYC’S current market capitalization is valued at around $US1.1 billion, according to CoinGecko.
In recent months, there have even been stories of Bored Apes being stolen by hackers, including a bizarre phishing scheme involving the actor and producer Seth Green.
“Well (friends), it happened to me. Got phished and had four NFTs stolen,” Green tweeted in May.
So what’s the deal with these curiously named NFTs?
Here’s a guide to all things Bored Apes, including a look at its history, meteoric rise, recent controversies and stratospheric pricing.

Bored Ape?

A golden fur ape was recently purchased for 777 Eth, or $1,478,000 USD, by Vis.Eth, a member of the Bored Ape Yacht Club, a deal that has attracted attention due to the prevailing market conditions.
This sale, however, shows that NFT backers like Vis.Eth think Bored Ape Yacht Club, or BAYC, has potential even outside of the present bear market.
The Golden Fur Bored Ape NFT, also known as Bored Ape #5383, has six features, including irate eyes, a lumberjack shirt, and a bored-looking, unshaven mouth.
Rarity Tools lists Ape #5383 as the 320th rarest ape.
The sale, however, is not the first significant one for Vis.first Eth.
BAYC continues to be one of the most well-liked blue-chip NFT collections.
In addition to the recent Golden Fur Bored Ape NFT sale, a Trippy Mega Mutant Bored Ape was also purchased by an NFT enthusiast for 2300 ETH, or $3.91 million USD.
Madonna, who just disclosed that she is pinning for Ape #3756, is another well-known person with a BAYC fetish.

Four of the actor’s cartoon collectibles were stolen in an phishing scam. One of them was set to star in a new sitcom.

Seth Green had four prized NFTs stolen in a phishing scam, and it derailed more in his life than you might think.
While all four collectibles are valuable, for Green, it was the loss of the Bored Ape, #8398, that hit the hardest, and for an important reason: Green is currently developing a TV show around the cartoon creature. With the loss of the NFT, Green may have also lost the right to license the Bored Ape’s likeness—meaning the fate of his show has been thrown into jeopardy.
Since then, online debates have raged about the collector’s intentions. Did they purchase the piece in good faith, not knowing it was stolen? Who was it? (Was it the ?!) And does that person now own the usage rights for the NFT? (For a full breakdown of the legal complications surrounding the case, read this from internet law expert James Grimmelmann.)
The case points to one of the many legal gray areas surrounding NFTs, some of which may remain that way for years, until precedents are hammered out in court. “But for now,” Dan McAvoy, an attorney at Polsinelli in New York, told Artnet News last year, “we are going to see a lot of civil litigation in the space where the terms of the platform or the NFT smart contract itself are not clear as to who owns the underlying asset tied to the NFT and how they are able to exploit that asset for further profit.”
White Horse Tavern, after the historic New York pub, Green’s show posits a world where popular NFT characters live among humans. The actor’s ape, a character named Fred Simian dons a Phoebe Bridgers-esque skeleton suit and has a halo above its head, tends bar at the tavern as a colorful characters shuffle through for a drink and conversation. Green introduced a rough cut of the show’s trailer at the NFT conference VeeCon last weekend.
“I have no plans for the ape,” Mr. Cheese told the news outlet. “As you can see I have been collecting for a while. I bought it because I liked it. It wasn’t a cheap buy either and was not marked as suspicious so I bought it in good faith. I’m happy to be in contact with Seth to chat about this.”

The Bored Ape Yacht Club is one of the most prestigious NFT collections in the world. A collection of 10,000 NFTs, each depicting an ape with different traits and visual attributes, Jimmy Fallon, Steph Curry and Post Malone are among their star-studded owners. Right now the price of entry is 52 ether, or $210,000.
Which is why it’s so painful to see that someone accidentally sold their Bored Ape NFT for $3,066.
One of these sales is not like the others.
It was bought instantaneously. The buyer paid an extra $34,000 to speed up the transaction, ensuring no one could snap it up before them. The Bored Ape was then promptly listed for $248,000. The transaction appears to have been done by a bot, which can be coded to immediately buy NFTs listed below a certain price on behalf of their owners in order to take advantage of these exact situations.
Fat finger trades happen sporadically in traditional finance — like the Japanese trader who almost bought 57% of Toyota’s stock in 2014 — but most financial institutions will stop those transactions if alerted quickly enough. Since cryptocurrency and NFTs are designed to be decentralized, you essentially have to rely on the goodwill of the buyer to reverse the transaction.
Similar incidents are increasingly being seen in NFTs, now that many collections have accumulated in market value over the past year. Last month someone tried selling a CryptoPunk NFT for $19 million, but accidentally listed it for $19,000 instead. Back in August, someone fat finger listed their Bored Ape for $26,000, an error that someone else immediately capitalized on. The original owner offered $50,000 to the buyer to return the Bored Ape — but instead the opportunistic buyer sold it for the then-market price of $150,000.
«The industry is so new, bad things are going to happen whether it’s your fault or the tech,» Max said. «Once you no longer have control of the outcome, forget and move on.»
The Bored Ape Yacht Club launched back in April, with 10,000 NFTs being sold for 0.08 ether each — about $190 at the time. While NFTs are often associated with individual digital art pieces, collections like the Bored Ape Yacht Club, which allow owners to flaunt their NFTs by using them as profile pictures on social media, are becoming increasingly prevalent. The Bored Ape Yacht Club has since become the second biggest NFT collection in the world, second only to , which launched in 2017 and is considered the «original» NFT collection.
Eminem has just joined the exclusive club of celebrity investors willing to pay heaps of cryptocurrency for NFTs that are nothing more than derivative monkey cartoons
Bored Ape #79 looks almost as bored as I feel when I think about NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and their supposedly seismic impact on art. My jaw slides, my eyelids hang down and I want to pick lice from my fur.
Even though I can identify with Bored Ape #79, I won’t be buying it, unlike Eminem who has bought another in this highly fashionable NFT “art” brand that looks slightly like him. It’s called EminApe and sports a military-urban peaked cap above its enervated face. He reportedly paid around $450,000 (£334,000) for it.
Someone was going to monetise digital culture eventually. And theoretically, from an artist’s point of view, that has to be a good thing – right? Suddenly, creators don’t have to settle for feeble fees from Spotify or see their images circulate free of charge. They can clean up. Rags to riches stories have helped to make the NFT art market the sentimental bag of air it is. Struggling unknowns find themselves selling NFTs for wildly escalating prices, outsiders who never got near success in the established art world suddenly leap to fame, and the art world, never slow to jump on a bandwagon, has joined in the fun with Christie’s selling a JPEG file by Beeple for $69m last spring.
The Bored Ape boom, however, should put an end to any romanticism about NFT art. It puts the consumer experience first and has absolutely nothing to do with empowering artists. It’s all about the collector’s ego.
For Eminem doesn’t just get a “unique” masterpiece of digital “art” for his money. Purchasers of an NFT from the Bored Ape collection also become members of the Bored Ape Yacht Club, a “swamp club for apes” where the cool dudes who fork out heaps of cryptocurrency for a monkey cartoon can hang out together. This is part of the well-planned strategy that is making Bored Apes a marketing sensation – and a mockery of all the inflated claims uncritically spouted about NFT art.
The Bored Ape Yacht Club could even be a satire on the NFT craze, were it not such a lucrative example of it. This is a totally cynical creation. The Club offers a new level of exclusivity, a virtual social club, on top of its promise of exclusive digital ownership. It seems the kind of fake cool meeting of pop culture and money that might attract the insecure Kendall Roy in the TV drama Succession – “Bored Apes are cool, right? Yeah they’re cool. See you in the Yacht Club to dish out more stuff on my dad!” Yet real-life celebrities are queuing up to join including Jimmy Fallon and rapper Post Malone. If they get bored posting graffiti in the club toilet (this is one of the perks) they can purchase a “serum” that allows them to remix ape designs to produce a Mutant Ape.
It’s all so neatly designed, so smoothly negotiable, so stylishly moronic, it makes the early (as in, early 2021) NFT art sensations look frightfully naive. The anonymous inventors of the Bored Ape were two literary loafers – they claim to have bonded over the novels of David Foster Wallace – who then hired a graphic designer to create the ape design. The Bored Apes are framed as portraits in an ironic nod to high art. But they’re not art of any bite or originality. The ape is a very ordinary and derivative bit of comic book design, heavily indebted to inspirations ranging from Jamie Hewlett to Rick and Morty.
It isn’t art that’s being sold here but attitude. The attitude says it all. Bored, emptied out, wrecked, and proud of it. That’s how the NFT art investors all feel, apparently. And so they should. NFTs are not good for art. They are not liberating for artists. Instead, as the Bored Ape Yacht Club makes horribly obvious, they serve nothing but money. They are just simian poker chips that celebrate the thrill of the market. A purer form of capitalism has never existed.
It’s time to move on from Bored Ape Yacht Club. It’s bad for nonfungible tokens (NFTs). It gives critics ammo and distracts from the technology, which is where the real value lies.
For those on the outside looking in, NFTs are nothing more than overpriced monkey JPEGs — or whichever choice of animated animal profile picture is in the firing line.
NFTs, of course, are much more than that.
But because of Bored Apes, and the countless imitations they’ve spawned, NFTs are getting a bad rep. “Bubble,” “money laundering” and “scams” are all terminology associated by critics with the new “Beanie Babies craze.”
It’s a disparaging distraction.
Yes, Bored Apes are still priced at more than $100,000 (a fifth of what they were worth at the market’s peak). But they’re tied to the tumult of cryptocurrency volatility and market sentiment, which has fallen along with the tumbling crypto market.
You also have Ape-backed borrowers on the verge of liquidation and 143 Apes already stolen, including Seth Green’s Bored Ape, which he was forced to pay to get back. And, of course, there are also the fans who slammed Eminem and Snoop Dogg when they performed as their Apes at the latest MTA Video Music Awards.
Bored Apes are the face of the NFT hype cycle. They might be the closest thing to the aforementioned Beanie Babies in the NFT space because of their status. But there’s a categorical mistake in painting an entire industry with the same brush: The hype is not the technology.
If you look past what’s on the market, you’ll find unique ideas with real-world value.
Hospitals and private institutions routinely sell patients’ data via so-called data brokers to companies like Pfizer — it’s a multibillion-dollar industry. This might seem harmless, but you never agreed to it. Maybe you wouldn’t have if you knew how much your data was worth.
Selling or securing your data as an NFT could become a real option, as long as the right hack-prevention measures are in place. Adding encryption to NFTs can keep content private while also enabling it to remain in public storage.
Another service NFTs can perform: streamlining royalty payments. Artist resale royalty rights haven’t been codified into U.S. law, only proposed. The EIP-2981 royalty standard made this a coding choice on Ethereum, leading the way for Polygon and other chains.
It’s still growing. On trading platform NFTGo, 10x more Ethereum wallets hold an NFT compared with August 2020. Doodles just raised $54 million to strengthen its intellectual property. Creators are building, and many skilled underground artists are making more now than ever before.
NFT art has flipped the traditional art industry on its head — not just because of the headline-grabbing numbers but also the promise of provenance. Even if profile pictures stole the show, the technology came first and will thrive without its Bored Ape counterparts.
It might also be better to leave the term “NFTs” in the past as a genre only defined by a limited boom-and-bust cycle and to move forward with “digital collectible,” a term that some have started using.
Some kind of split is inevitable — and healthy — to free builders from the burden of overinflated expectations, market collapses and celebrity cash grabs.
If you still don’t see the value, you might still have Bored Ape goggles. Take them off. There’s a whole suite of NFT technology use cases on the rise.

Meet the Bored Ape Yacht Club
Bored Ape Yacht Club or Bored Ape is the official partner of a typical NFT with an illustration of a monkey with a bored face. It became widely known after being shown at the crypto center Miami and later became a best-selling art gimmick.
This NFT monkey in the spring of 2021 was priced at USD 190. That number continues to rise until now and has touched billions of rupiah.
It was mysterious, but finally, the founder of Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) was revealed. This was after BuzzFeed, a well-known online media, traced business records from Yuga Labs, the company behind the BAYC project, which led to Solano’s address.
Finally, the actual names of the two founders of BAYC were revealed, namely Wylie Aronow and Greg Solano. When working in the NFT ecosystem, they never use real names. They use the pseudonyms Gordon Goner (Wylie Aronow) and Gagamel (Greg Solano).
However, even though the real identity of the founder of BAYC is known, the illustrator who made this Bored Ape has yet to be revealed.
What Is the Bored Ape Yacht Club?
It’s this combination of features—or the relative rarity of each combo—that may be the very thing that underpins the popularity of the Bored Apes. In the BAYC community, “rarity” is a formal measure of the uniqueness of each Ape.
There are dedicated websites that score Apes for their rarity. According to Rarity Tools, Bored Ape No. 8135 recently held the highest “custom rarity score”. Notable features for Bored Ape No. 8135 include a dagger in its mouth, a “trippy captain’s hat”, and a silver stud earring.
Other than rarity, there’s nothing ostensibly unique about the artworks themselves—they’re just pictures of monkeys, after all. What separates BAYC from the crowd is that it has become a cultural phenomenon.
For the NFT cognoscenti, owning a Bored Ape means more than just possessing a digital cartoon monkey—it’s a ticket granting the holder access to an exclusive membership club with perks like merchandise, parties and ApeCoins (APE), among other things.
Some of those benefits are
-Access to THE BATHROOM, a collaborative graffiti board that’s only accessible to MetaMask wallets holding Bored Apes.
-Exclusive Discord server
— Access to additional NFTs
— Access to the ApeCoin cryptocurrency
Buying one Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT gets you to access to a whole NFT world and crypto-assets.
«This is what makes BAYC so strong,» said Yehudah Petscher.
«They capture a moment in time where NFTs were starting to become relevant in a mainstream way, and owning one is owning a piece of that moment.»
Bored Ape NFT accidentally sells for $3,000 instead of $300,000
Bored Ape number 4,418
An in-demand non-fungible token (NFT) has been accidentally sold for a little more than $3,000 (£2,270) — one-hundredth of its market price.
The Bored Ape Yacht Club is limited run of 10,000 pieces of digital art, each with minor variations.
But the owner of Bored Ape number 3,547 made a «fat fingered» typing error when listing the item for sale online.
The NFT was instantly snapped up by an automated account — and put back on sale at nearly $250,000.
The seller, maxnaut, told CNet he had meant to list Bored Ape number 3,547 for sale at 75 ethereum (ETH), the crypto-currency used for many NFT trades.
But a «lapse of concentration» — during one of the many trades he lists online every day — had caused him to instead type in «0.75 ETH» ($2,989).
The suspected-bot buyer also paid very high «gas» fees — which determine how quickly the Ethereum network processes a transaction — of 8 ETH ($32,000), to ensure the sale went through almost instantly.
Bored Ape number 3,547 was relisted at nearly $250,000
In traditional banking transactions, such errors are usually reversed easily if the bank facilitating them is told about the mistake quickly.
But in the unregulated crypto-trading market, there is usually no way to reverse such a sale.

Rows of the most expensive Monkey NFT Ever Sold

There are as many as 10,000 variations of the collection of Bored Ape artworks. Each of them has a unique character, and there is no twin.
Thus, in each of these characters, there is only one. This makes Bored Ape so valuable in the eyes of NFT collectors.
Bored Ape #2087

This edition is the most expensive Bored Ape character (769 ETH) because it is considered unique. This monkey seems to have colorful skin, which is very futuristic.
The NFT then sold for USD 2.3 million. This NFT has changed hands twice in the last four months at fantastic prices.
Bored Ape #3749

Second, Bored Ape issue #3749 shows a monkey character wearing a sailor hat and a dark gray t-shirt. The monkey’s eyes seem to glow like the X-Men character, Cyclops.
Interestingly, this image was valued at 740 ETH or around USD 2.9 million. The illustration has also been traded three times in the last year.
Bored Ape #8585

Then, there is the monkey NFT issue #8585, which sells for 679 ETH (around USD 2.67 million).
This monkey appears with colorful skin like the previous issue, #2087, but this one is dressed up with a sultan’s crown, an adorable bitten lip, and glasses.
Who are the artists who collect the Monkey NFT?
Justin Bieber reportedly bought the Bored Ape editions #3850 and #3001 for 500 ETH. Bieber’s transaction value is equivalent to USD 1.3 million.
The “Queen of Pop” purchased Bored Ape issue #4988. The illustration shows a monkey with plum-red skin and eyes all over its body.
This 80s pop star bought this NFT in March 2022 for 180 ETH or around USD 500 thousand.
In this NFT, Jimmy has a special request to be customized: a blue background, a navy blue striped shirt, heart-shaped glasses, cream-colored fur, and a sailor captain’s hat. Jimmy spends 46.6 ETH for this one Ape.
The legendary rapper Eminem cannot deny the charm of the NFT monkey.
One of the Ethereum co-founders is curious, what if Bored Ape is combined with Mega Mutant Serum? Spending USD 3.5 million, he then bought one of the remaining Mega Mutant Serums.
The serum was then airdropped to Bored Ape, which eventually created a new type of Mutant Ape.
Neymar, one of the best footballers on the planet, also bought the Bored Ape, namely issue #6633. The Ape costs over 1 million USD.
Remember to check the price of your latest crypto assets on the Indodax Market!
Why are the Bored Ape Yacht Club’s NFTS so expensive?
The NFTs made by the BAYC is the new sensation among celebrities. That is one of the causes of the increment in their prices.
Having a BAYC gives you status, and people like that specific recognition, especially if you belong to the upper-class circle.
«Some careers require a person to be relevant, so what better way to do that than owning the most well-known NFT in the world,» said Yehudah Petscher, a strategist at NFT data aggregator CryptoSlam.
«BAYC is cool, and everyone wants the cool thing.»
However, the real value is the membership access to the Bored Ape Yacht Club.
The Bored Ape Yacht Club is «a digital club with members-only access and benefits.»
Bored Ape Prices
Bored Apes were first released in April 2021, with an original mint price of 0.08 ETH, equivalent to about $192 USD at the time.
Apes’ floor price, the price for the cheapest NFT within a collection, has fluctuated wildly.
It peaked in April 2022 at around $420,000 almost a year to the day when the collection was released. But the BAYC floor price has fallen amid the crypto downturn— now at 72 ETH, nearly $110,000. That’s a drop of more than 70% in five months.
For rarer Apes, the price has frequently been into the millions of dollars. For example, BAYC No. 5383 sold on Aug 18 for 777 ETH, roughly $1.4 million. The rare gold fur attribute primarily drives its high price.
The most expensive Ape ever sold also possesses gold fur, BAYC No. 8817, sold at Sotheby’s “Natively Digital 1.2: The Collectors” in October 2021 for $3.4 million.
It is also important to remember that BAYC and most of the other largest NFT collections are denominated in Ethereum, meaning not only is BAYC subject to the volatility of the floor price itself, but also the fluctuation of ETH’s price against US dollars and other fiat currencies.

В чём успех NFT проектов аватаров?

What Is a Mutant Ape NFT?
Yuga Labs has continuously expanded the BAYC ecosystem, driving more demand for these digital creatures. This includes the launch of its sister collection, Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC).
On Aug 28, 2021, 20,000 Mutant Apes were released, resembling mutated versions of their Bored Ape cousins. In its creation, each Bored Ape was exposed to a “vial of Mutant Serum.”
BAYC holders had an option to pair their unique NFT with the Mutant Serum, hence creating a Mutant Ape in addition to the Bored Ape they already held.
Half of MAYCs were created this way. The remainder were sold to the public via a Dutch auction, with $96 million in sales in less than one hour.
Mutant Apes are just another way that Yuga Labs has turned BAYC into a cultural juggernaut.
But with the pandemic-era bull market cooling drastically this year, Apes of all varieties have cratered in price, leaving even their famous celebrity owners holding the bag.

FAQs
Why are bored ape NFTs so expensive?
The answer lies largely in their rarity—there are only 10,000 available worldwide—but also because of the exclusive club perks such including private online spaces, unique merch and members-only events, as well as the ownership of the NFTs full commercial rights.Ownership of full commercial rights is unlike other collections, as usually collectors and investors are prohibited from commercially marketing the NFTs they purchase, and are conditioned to terms of service.
How much is the cheapest bored ape NFT?
As of August 2022, the Ethereum floor price of the Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT collection dropped to its lowest level since the start of the year amid a continued crypto market crash. An NFT floor price is the lowest amount of money you would have to spend to buy an NFT from a collection. Currently, the BAYC floor price sits at 79.99 ETH, equating to around $107,000.
Are NFTs worth it?
“NFTs are risky because their future is uncertain, and we don’t yet have a lot of history to judge their performance,” she notes.“Since NFTs are so new, it may be worth investing small amounts to try it out for now.”
How Many Bored Ape NFTs Are There?
Created via an algorithm, there will only ever be 10,000 Bored Ape NFTs in circulation.
Scarcity also means BAYC NFTs are highly illiquid. OpenSea, the biggest NFT marketplace, has previously taken the action of freezing the listing of certain Apes if they are reported as stolen.
This action is considered controversial in some quarters, as a central entity intervening goes against one of the core pillars of crypto: decentralisation. On the other hand, it helps prevent perpetrators from selling the stolen Apes for crypto they can withdraw.
The owner said that NFT marketplace OpenSea had «frozen» the assets for him including one Clonex, seven Mutant Ape Yacht Club and eight BAYC NFTs currently valued at around 615 Ether.

The owner of the NFTs Todd Kramer said that NFT marketplace OpenSea had “frozen” the assets for him including one Clonex, seven Mutant Ape Yacht Club, and eight BAYC NFTs currently valued at around 615 Ether. For those who don’t know, BAYC NFTs are a popular collection of 10,000 unique bored apes created by Yuga Labs. This collection has seen over half a billion dollars in sales to date, as per dappradar.com metrics.
BAYC NFT is owned by famous celebrities, such as basketball icon Steph Curry, music artist Post Malone, and even American TV host Jimmy Fallon.
Bored Ape Thefts
Bored Apes have been the subject of several thefts. Many wonder how this is even possible, given these Apes don’t exist in the “real world” and are digital creations.
But if a hacker gains access to someone’s private key, they can transfer out any cryptocurrency or NFTs, including Apes. Incidents involving Bored Apes have gained extra attention given their high value compared with other NFTs collections.
Several phishing scams have targeted Bored Ape owners, using methods such as gaining access to the Bored Ape Discord server before sharing phishing links to try to make off with some stolen Apes.
Who Owns Bored Apes?
Celebrities, influencers and regular folks own Bored Apes. Some BAYC owners use their Apes as their social media profile images.
Well-known celebrities love their Bored Apes; Madonna owns BAYC No. 4988, Justin Bieber has BAYC No. 3001 and Tom Brady owns BAYC No. 3667, to name just a few.
“The general public hears about a celebrity paying money for a BAYC NFT, which in turn creates validation and a perceived value in the project itself,” says Dave Broome, CEO of US-based Orange Comet, which has launched several NFT collections.
Spiritless simians
The Bored Apes, launched in April 2021, are «programmatically generated» — a computer script mixes and matches an array of colours, designs and accessories to make each unique.
Initially sold for 0.08 ETH each ($320 at today’s prices), they now sell for at least 50 ETH ($200,000).
Beyond that, there are benefits to bring part of the «yacht club» — including invitations to community events and access to exclusive digital content.
The technology also uses a lot of energy — because of the way the transactions are verified by high-powered computing — leading to criticism the industry is bad for the environment.
Purchased by celebrities from Justin Bieber to Gwyneth Paltrow, and exciting cryptocurrency enthusiasts, these digital avatars promise a vaunted place in the metaverse and IP potential.
On The Tonight Show in late January, Jimmy Fallon held up a portrait of a cartoon ape wearing a sailor’s hat, a striped shirt and heart-shaped sunglasses. “This is my ape,” he said, as his guest, Paris Hilton, gave it her approval. She also had an ape, which Fallon had earlier shown the audience, a red-furred version wearing sunglasses and an S&M cap. “We’re part of the same community,” Fallon said. “We’re both apes.”
One reason some are willing to spend big on these apes is that they’re part of one’s outward representation in the burgeoning metaverse, as one might invest in an eye-catching coat or handbag in the physical world. “I’m sort of trying to commit to this being my identity for a while,” says Adam Draper, managing director of Boost VC, a fund that was an early investor in cryptocurrencies, who bought his ape about five months ago for an undisclosed sum that he characterized as “expensive.” Buying a Bored Ape also means buying the underlying intellectual property to your specific ape’s image—which more and more people are capitalizing by licensing for comic books, film and TV, even licensing images to cannabis companies. Draper says Bored Ape Yacht Club will be “the next
Disney
” “It’s the Disney built by creators,” Draper says. “I believe it’s the fastest bootstrapped way to build IP.“We are all a part of this community, this club, and we’re all trying to make our own apes more valuable, but by building a comic book series or making a movie or a sculpture, suddenly you’ve created value for the whole network.” This network effect is what separates Bored Ape Yacht Club from other NFT projects. Athletes like Stephen Curry and Serena Williams, musicians like Eminem, Diplo and Future, and actors like Kevin Hart all own apes. (Many of the high-profile ape owners declined to comment for this article through their representatives.) “Steph Curry was pretty early to Bored Apes, which makes sense because the NBA has already done partnerships like NBA Top Shot NFTs,” says Mason Nystrom, a senior research analyst at Messari, a crypto-market intelligence platform. “Once you get one celebrity or two, then you get 10, and there’s that flywheel effect.”The rich and famous flocking to Bored Ape Yacht Club has prompted speculation that some are being given Bored Apes or are paid in exchange for promoting them. Many buy them through MoonPay, a fintech company that builds payment infrastructure for crypto and offers a “concierge service,” which handles the sometimes clunky process of buying NFTs for high-net-worth individuals (celebrities including Post Malone and Fallon have used it to get their Bored Apes). Justin Hamilton, a MoonPay spokesperson, says the service never involves giving Bored Apes to celebrities or paying them, and that it’s a fee-for-service business. Perhaps celebrities simply want them because other celebrities have them, he says.“It has a lot of similar attributes of other scarce assets, so it’s developed a momentum of its own,” says Hamilton. “It’s sort of like asking, why did the latest Jordan drop become popular, or what’s the magic behind Supreme?”A Bored Ape is, perhaps above all else, a strange status symbol for a highly particular subset of people. “This is the Lamborghini of the digital world,” Draper says. “But it’s more effective, because you’re persistently online with it forever, but with a Lamborghini you’re not driving it forever.”
Why is Bored Ape so expensive?
The illustration of the bored monkey was made to fill free time so that the faces displayed are bored.
However, suddenly many celebrities liked this work and bought several of them. This makes the algorithm start to side with this NFT monkey.
Over time, the price of this NFT series has skyrocketed, and the NFT itself is increasingly being sought after, especially by collectors.
Long story short, Bored Apes then started collaborating with various world-renowned brands, such as Adidas. This partnership allows them to make NFT games.
BendDAO and the Bored Ape Yacht Club
Potentially causing further movement ahead is the danger of liquidation for several borrowers at BendDAO. This NFT lending platform allows BAYC NFTs to be put up as collateral on loans.
With a lot of Bored Apes pledged as collateral months ago when the floor price was significantly higher, loans could be liquidated if the market sees further downside.
If this scenario were to materialize, there could be implications for the NFT market and the influence of BAYC.
With a persistent turbulent macro environment, Ethereum and Bored Apes will remain highly volatile going forward. BAYC remains an extremely risky investment, with a significant potential for downside and upside.
