The first NFT from Ross Ulbricht’s ‘Genesis Collection’ has been purchased for 1,446 ETH ($6. 2m) by a DAO working to free the Silk Road founder from life imprisonment.

The NFT was purchased by ‘FreeRossDAO‘, which is a decentralised autonomous organisation (DAO) dedicated to freeing Ulbricht from prison, advancing prison reform and “protesting the injustices of the American prison system”.

Established on December 2, the DAO raised 2,836 ETH ($12. 2m) from over 4,000 global contributors in support of the effort, which was subsequently used to secure the landmark NFT from Ulbricht.

The auction itself attracted swathes of attention from the entire crypto community including Kraken CEO Jesse Powell and ‘StarryNightCapital‘ due to the history and controversy surrounding e-commerce website Silk Road.

Now, according to Freeross. org, the NFT auction is “an opportunity to bring renewed attention to his plight and gain support from NFT communities and collectors”.

‘$ROSS’ will then represent governance rights – which allow holders to vote on governance proposals and contribute to future decisions- within FreeRossDAO and a fractional part of the “GENESIS COLLECTION” NFT.

The funds raised from the Ross Ulbricht Genesis Collection NFT will however not go directly to Ross Ulbricht or his family. Instead, they will be transferred to a legally separate entity that will redistribute the proceeds towards the Art4Giving fund and efforts to free Ross Ulbricht.

The $6. 2m sale of Ross Ulbricht’s debut NFT makes it the sixth-largest NFT sale ever recorded behind a trio of Cryptopunks sales and the 2100 ETH sale of a ‘Ringers‘ NFTs.

E-commerce giant eBay is looking to get some skin in the NFT game despite declining interest as represented by total global sales and a contracting crypto market.

The current collection includes thirteen “limited-edition” digital collectibles pertaining to a tier-based system, containing 299 separate NFTs within the green, gold, platinum, and diamond tiers.

Additional drops of OneOf’s sports legends NFT series, repurposing iconic Sports Illustrated covers, will take place throughout the remainder of the year in partnership with eBay, the companies said.

eBay’s foray into the NFT market comes shortly on the heels of its biggest rival Amazon and its CEO Andy Jassy who told CNBC last month he envisioned a “possible” future where the platform sold NFTs.

NFTs Who Cares?

Despite the interest from online sales giants, activity in the NFT market has wavered alongside declining prices throughout the broader crypto market.

According to the Q1 2022 quarterly NFT market report by data provider NonFungible, sales volume, exchange volume and the total number of active addresses with digital collectibles has steadily declined since peaking in January.

Indeed, the total number of sales beginning on May 15 was around 25,518, data shows. That has since dropped to around 23,117, according to the latest figures witnessed over a weekly period. In September, the weekly average stood at roughly 225,000 individual sales.

A drop of this magnitude can likely be attributed to a realization by many NFT holders that their anticipated returns from secondary market sales aren’t panning out as previously hoped.

Still, both OneOf and eBay remain steadfast their partnership will lead to the “next 100 million non-crypto-native mass consumers,” according to the NFT platform’s CEO Lin Dai.

As a part of our forum launch we will be selling a limited amount of AlgoLaunch NFTs in 4 phases: Register/Opt-in, Whitelist Sale, Public Sale and NFT Claim. Each ship’s Health/Speed/Turn Rate/Capacity has 5 levels of strengths that make the respective stats more powerful, namely SSS, SS, S, A and B. The strength of each stat will be determined randomly at the time of mint.

This week’s Top 10 NFT sales list is rather diverse with metaverse land, some traditional appearances by CryptoPunks and Bored Apes, but also emblematic NFTs switching owners. At the top of the list, we have CryptoPunk #4156 which made headlines with a sale worth over $10 million.
