SmartStudy, creator of Baby Shark and Pinkfong, will drop the first Baby Shark NFT collection on the MakersPlace platform tomorrow.

The six-piece collection, which includes one unique piece and five limited edition pieces, features Baby Shark and his family in original, loopable animations inspired by holographic collectors’ playing cards. Each piece is accompanied by a piece of audio that references the genre-defining song and its iconic vocal.

“The unique piece, titled ‘Baby Shark N1’, is a one-minute-long digital art piece that features Baby Shark as he journeys through a newly reimagined dream-like underwater world, seen through a lens that portrays Baby Shark in a captivating new light,” said the company.

The winner of that unique piece will be gifted a custom vinyl created by Pinkfong exclusively for the NFT. It will feature music from the digital piece along with accompanying artwork.

Since it’s debut on YouTube in June 2016, Baby Shark has earned a Diamond certification from the RIAA based on sales of more than 11 million copies. The song peaked at No. 32 on Billboard’s Hot 100. It’s also the most-watched YouTube video of all time with over 9.7 billion views to date.

This NFT collection is called Baby Shark: Collection No. 2 and features all the members of the animated shark family, including Baby Shark, Mommy Shark, and Daddy Shark. The collection has 10,000 assets in total and these are being released in three different drops.

SmartStudy, creator of the viral “Baby Shark Dance” video, is diving into NFTs.The South Korean online education provider announced Tuesday a partnership with MakersPlace, a San Francisco-based startup that mints and sells non-fungible tokens, to launch its Baby Shark NFT collection next month. Fans of the animated shark family can own Baby Shark NFTs on MakersPlace, whose early investors include rapper Eminem and former Sotheby’s CEO Bill Ruprecht.“As a sensation born on the internet, it is a natural progression for Baby Shark to embrace NFTs, which will be a significant step of the next chapter of Baby Shark’s stamp on the digital landscape,” Bin Jeong, CEO of Pinkfong USA, a unit of SmartStudy, said in the statement. “Baby Shark Dance” is the most-viewed video on YouTube with almost 9.7 billion views. The two-minute earworm about a family of sharks, released in 2016, went viral in 2018.In August, MakersPlace announced that it has raised $30 million in Series A financing led by Bessemer Venture Partners, a Silicon Valley-based fund best known for its investments in Pinterest and Shopify, and Pantera Capital. MakersPlace was founded in 2018 by Yash Nelapati (Pinterest employee number one), Daniel Chu and Ryoma Ito.

Baby Shark: Collection No. 2 will be released in 3 parts:

Pinkfong, the company behind “Baby Shark” — aka the song with the most-viewed video on all of YouTube — has announced an NFT project titled “Baby Shark: Collection No. 2.” The NFTs in the collection, all 10,000 of them, will feature generative art of the titular baby shark and the rest of his shark family. Generative NFTs are like the Bored Ape Yacht Club, where there are a variety of randomized traits across a collection.

When I first heard this news, I had two thoughts simultaneously (using up my entire daily allotment):

So, yes, this is apparently going to be the second set of NFTs featuring Brooklyn (TIL, that’s the baby shark’s name) and his family. The first was announced late last year and, according to Pinkfong, sold out immediately. I regret to inform you that people have spent hundreds and even thousands of dollars on these NFTs, though the initial sale happened in December 2021. That was, according to NonFungible’s market tracker, riiiight before the NFT market started to slump. Sadly, that probably means there are some Baby Shark bag holders out there.

What’s an NFT?

NFTs have been making headlines lately, some selling for millions of dollars, with high-profile memes like Nyan Cat and the “deal with it” sunglasses being put up for auction. What’s definitely not for kids is the “Baby Shark” party at NFT.NYC that Pinkfong will be using to celebrate its second round of NFTs. The company describes the event as a “night of fantastic entertainment, music, and networking,” and let me tell you; I am absolutely dying to know what kind of networking goes on at a party for “Baby Shark” NFTs. Am I curious enough to endure NFT.NYC to find out? Well, unfortunately, I’m too busy doing absolutely anything else that day (plus, you know, I wasn’t invited for some reason). But if you end up going, please email me to tell me what it was like.

I definitely wouldn’t say this invite looks geared towards children.

When it comes down to it, you won’t hear any judgment from me about the adults that personally decide to buy into the “Baby Shark” NFT bandwagon when this collection comes out later this year. (Not because I don’t judge people for buying NFTs, but because I usually do it quietly.) But Pinkfong’s website says that the company is about “defining the first moments of childhood.” Parents out there, please — do not define your kids’ first moments with speculative assets.
