So let’s dive into some of this without overcomplicating things to figure out why we’re putting out faith in this ecosystem and what it means to those who want to come along with us.

How is Polkadot different from Ethereum?

Let me try to flex my brain muscles and put it as simply as I possibly can.

So Polygon is an add-on to Ethereum to allow it to do what Polkadot promises to do by design.

Both of these solutions have their clear advantages and ultimately it depends on the team that wants to use them and the use case at hand.

Moonriver is one of Polkadot’s parachains, or more specifically, one of Kusama’s parachains. Simply put, Kusama could be called the “beta” version of Polkadot. Moonriver launched on August 26th 2021 on Kusama. Later on, the big sister to Moonriver, known as Moonbeam, will launch on Polkadot, in about a year’s time.

Moonriver allows Ethereum (Solidity) based smart contracts to be deployed on Polkadot and interfaces with Metamask.

Polkadot doesn’t by default support Ethereum smart contracts, and although some hold that against it as a disadvantage, this was a purposeful decision. Polkadot is primarily a governance layer and its other functionality is minimal.

Why are we working with Moonriver?

These things will be different:

• You will need to use MOVR token to purchase NFTs
• Since Moonriver was just launched and its token isn’t listed on exchanges yet, the easiest way to get MOVR tokens is to swap your ETH on Sushi Swap or other liquidity tools once they become available
• You won’t be able to move your NFT onto Ethereum based platforms (although this is something that will be possible in the near future so don’t worry!)

What Is Moonriver (MOVR)?

Moonriver is an Ethereum-compatible, smart-contract parachain on Kusama. It is intended to be a companion network to Moonbeam, where it will provide a permanently incentivized canary network. New code will ship to Moonriver first, where it can be tested and verified under real economic conditions. Once proven, the same code will ship to Moonbeam on Polkadot.

It does this by providing a full EVM implementation, a Web3-compatible API, and bridges that connect Moonriver to existing Ethereum networks.

This allows developers to deploy existing Solidity smart contracts and DApp frontends to Moonriver with minimal changes.

What is MOVR?

As a decentralized smart contract platform, Moonriver requires a utility token to function. MOVR is central to the design of Moonriver and cannot be removed without sacrificing essential functionality. The Moonriver token uses include:

• Supporting the gas metering of smart contract execution
• Incentivizing collators and powering the mechanics around the creation of a decentralized node infrastructure on which the platform can run
• Paying for network transaction fees
