What exactly are Time Machines, SPACE NFTs, Time Wardens, Hourglasses, and Forges?

A Time Machine, otherwise known as a Personal Metaverse is a player’s portal to their own pocket universe. You can think of the Time Machine as a starter home to hang out with friends or showcase your NFTs and loot. Every player is given a Time Machine after reaching a certain level, in the early stages of the game.

SPACE, Big Time’s version of virtual land, is used as an expansion to your Time Machine. There are 5 different rarity tiers (Rare, Epic, Legendary, Mythic, Exalted) and 3 different sizes for SPACE (Small, Medium, Large).

SPACE is an NFT, therefore it is transferable and has a fixed supply. It can be traded on the Big Time Marketplace or withdrawn outside of the platform. There is only 600,000 SPACE being minted with 60,000 being sold on our December 21st sale.

The larger the SPACE, the more capacity it has to install more features. For example, Time Wardens and Forges enable players to earn Tokens as they play. The cosmetic qualities of SPACE scale up with its rarity. Either an increase in size or an increase in rarity supports more Time Wardens and Forges.

Time Wardens are summoned into SPACE and may be purchased in-game or through the Marketplace. The Time Wardens’ main purpose is to either create Hourglass NFTs or fill them back up.

Hourglasses are needed to unlock the ability to collect Big Time Tokens as loot drops. This will be the only way to acquire the Token as there will not be any pre-sales or any token grants to the development team.

Forges are a way for players to upgrade their NFTs to increase their rarity. The Forges are installed on SPACE NFTs and can upgrade NFT equipment to new levels.

Many new features will be introduced to SPACE in the future with new and exciting abilities.

What is Big Time?

The game is set to be free to play. The developer — Big Time Studios — has stated that you can absolutely just grind your way to earning SPACE, and getting NFT items drops, through play. You don’t have to buy in. Early explainer videos stress this point, so it’s not something we expect to change in the future. This may play a role in eroding the viability of guilds, as scholars can just play. They don’t have to rent.

Big Time presents something of an alternative reality, where history is collapsing in on itself compliments of some big bad that you — and theoretically every other squad in the game — is collectively fighting back against. Players can engage in certain timelines that involve real historical figures like Genghis Kahn, Billy the Kid, Albert Einstein, Joan of Arc and the like. Although it’s unclear how these NPCs will interact with player characters; perhaps they simply evoke a setting.

Big Time announced in November 2021 that it will have its own in-game token and SPACE NFTs (functioning much like virtual parcels in other metaverse games), but the crypto token has not been named at the time of writing. There will be no pre-sale or early offering of this token to anyone (including the devs), so the token is planned to be completely community-driven. The primary way to acquire this token will be by playing the game.

The game is a large project; implementing play-to-earn crypto gaming, metaverse and NFTs. In a sense, it’s completely embracing the ideals of Web3 — decentralization and token-based economies on the Internet.

Playing Big Time

Big time is a co-op action-RPG played from a third-person perspective. Players can party up into groups of six and explore a large 3D overworld and a Destiny-styled hub called Epoch City. The experience seems to take its visual cues from the likes of No Man’s Sky, Destiny, Fortnite and even Skylanders.

Time machines — that look a bit like black hole portals — are then used to pull the squad into dungeon instances, where a real-time mix of melee and magic-based combat is used to cut through swathes of enemies. These time machines can also be decorated with NFT artifacts owned by the player, and be used to swap character classes.

Players can meet and form a party of six before embarking on a journey towards the game’s dungeons, where they fight foes, overcome challenges and collect items. Collected items can be used to improve their own characters or be traded for other cryptocurrencies or fiat.

Big Time has its own NFT marketplace that enables players to trade, purchase or sell in-game assets seamlessly through its patented Vault technology, which allows payments through debit or credit cards.

The player uses a time machine to move across timelines and in something of a unique twist, players aren’t locked to one class or the other. You’re free to switch between classes with the same character, and then select the playstyle you prefer at any given time (or should that be timeline?).

We bet that there will be some strategy involved in forming a squad of players that will compliment each other in battle.

What is Big Time’s token?

At the time of writing, Big Time’s utility token has not been named.

The token will be earned through gameplay (battling and defeating enemies) and will be used to purchase in-game cosmetic NFTs, repair weapons and speed up crafting times.

How to buy Big Time’s token

Getting Big Time’s in-game token will require unlocking or buying something called a Time Keeper (a «being» of incredible power), which will allow you to get another item called an Hourglass. Players will also have the option of buying an Hourglass from the marketplace.

With an Hourglass, you can head out and hunt for the in-game tokens. You’ll need to replenish the «sands of time» within your Hourglass with the help of the Time Keeper to keep collecting tokens.

At the time of writing, the token has not been named and isn’t available on crypto exchanges.

It looks like NULL may not be available to purchase on an exchange in the US.

Since Big Time is a role-playing game, its NFTs come in the form of game items that can be acquired via dungeon drops or purchased from the marketplace. However, the trading, renting and sale of NFTs are restricted to cosmetic items to avoid diluting the game’s competitiveness.

How to buy Big Time NFTs

NFT collectors can visit Big Time’s attached marketplace at Binance NFT Marketplace (the Binance NFT marketplace is not available to US residents), which offers the purchase of exclusive VIP passes for early game access. These passes give early players a head start on earning in-game NFTs.

Other NFTs that can be bought include Big Time packs, which consist of a series of collectible, animated postcards featuring the different locations players could see in the game.

You can purchase a SPACE NFT on Big Time’s market, which are expansions to your personal Time Machine. SPACE is essentially land or virtual real estate like we see in other metaverse games. You can add crafting stations to your SPACE, decorate the rooms, add forges, install portals, and much more.

The cost of buying SPACE varies – a lot. It could run you anywhere from $300 to $23,000, depending on the size and rarity. These NFTs are limited, and once they’re gone, they’re gone (until expansions come out, anyway).

If you’re anxious to get started, you can also buy a VIP Access Pass at the market – a Gold pass is listed for $9,900, which gives you early access to the release and access to limited edition in-game content.

About Big Time developers

We can’t ignore the experience behind Big Time’s development team. As mentioned, the CEO, Ari Meilich, used to be CEO of Decentraland. But it’s the team he has assembled around him that raises eyebrows.

The creative director, Ken Harsha, is an ex-Treyarch and worked on the Call of Duty series for Activision-Blizzard. Lead designer, TJ Stamm, has two decades of work in his locker from EA, Snowblind Studios, Neversoft and Infinity Ward. CTO, Matthew Tonks, spent five years at Epic Games with lead artist Aaron Smith. While art director Carlo Arellano has hall-of-famers God of War, Ratchet & Clank, and World of Warcraft on his resume.

Big Time roadmap

The game is set to drop in 2022. If we had to speculate, the official launch is likely slated for mid-year since early access is set for early 2022.

The first SPACE sale was launched in December 2021, and there are still some for sale, available on Big Time’s market accessible on the main site BigTime.gg.

Bottom line

Until we can see some more gameplay footage and get the name for the token that you can earn in the game, we can’t speculate too much about earning potential on Big Time. Hopefully, once early access drops, we’ll get more insight on this highly-anticipated game.

Buying and selling NFTs is supposed to be easier for players, as well. Big Time and Circle partnered to offer a way for players to use debt and credit cards, wire transfers and deposit USDC on the Big Time market to buy NFTs.

The prospect of being able to buy NFTs with a credit and debit card is exciting and could remove a lot of scary barriers for gamers new to crypto gaming. The multiplayer aspect is enticing as well, and so is the ability to switch between classes. But we don’t love how expensive some of the SPACE NFTs are. These SPACEs may give paying players more of an in-game advantage, but we’ll see.
