Hello Alec, can you tell us about yourself? How did you become the recognized artist you are today?
My name is Alec Monopoly; I’m from New York City and I’m a street artist. I started street painting in 2008, when the subprime financial crisis on Wall Street occured. I became known by staging Mister Monopoly, the famous character from the widely known board game Monopoly. Mister Monopoly is what made my reputation and is also what gave me my nickname in the world of street art. At the time, everyone in New York was focused on this financial crisis and my art was a reflection of how society felt at that time.
What made your career take off in the United States and internationally?
I was arrested by the New York police; my arrest was depicted by the national media and then in art galleries internationally. Since that time, I have not stopped creating based on the character of Mister Monopoly and I am now recognized by the international art world. My works were exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in Bangkok and I am now opening my own gallery in Dubai.
The start of Alec Monopoly‘s story is in 2008, a striking parallel with the beginning roots of crypto history which also occured at the same time of the subprime financial crisis. Similar to the way that Satoshi Nakamoto recounts in his Bitcoin white paper the cataclysm caused by this crisis and the loss of confidence in financial institutions, Alec highlights these events in his works of art in the midst of the New York streets. The comparison does not stop there as Alec has long remained an anonymous character, standing in the shadow of his works.
Can you explain to us your anonymity and why you changed your mind?
Similar to Banksy, I have long been anonymous, using a scarf to hide my face. I did this to avoid detection by the police when I started out on the streets of New York. Today I have decided to reveal my face, because I am recognized in the art world and I tell myself that there is no longer a reason to remain anonymous. That being said, it got me into some trouble with the authorities.
We cannot resist the temptation to ask you if you are the person hidden behind the pseudonym “Satoshi Nakamoto” as your career started in 2008 and in anonymity. (Laughs)
(Laughs) I wish I was Satoshi Nakamoto; but no, it’s not me! In fact, I hadn’t even made the connection before our exchange.

NFT platform Hypermint and NFT art curator NFTGrails on Tuesday announced a partnership, to launch “Rags to Richie,» New York-based street artist Alec Monopoly’s NFT collection.
HyperMint, a new self-service platform from MoonPay will serve as the minting partner for the NFT collection.
The collection centers on a new character created by Monopoly, combining elements of his most popular subjects with 10,000 unique NFTs featuring traits and backgrounds personally hand-drawn by Monopoly.
Monopoly has also partnered with JOYSTICK to create an immersive SandBox Club and Metaverse Art Gallery to exhibit Alec’s ‘Rags to Richie’ art. A major event featuring Monopoly doing a Live DJ Set in Sandbox, in the Rags to Richie space will take place after the collection launches.

In the business world they say «you can mine either mine for gold or you can sell pickaxes. » In brothers Avery Andon and Alec Monopoly’s case, they’ve got both bases covered and then some.
Andon, a veteran art consultant and founder of ArtLife Gallery, and Alec, a prolific visual artist and pop culture phenomenon, are the latest to join the NFT arena, and they’re tackling the space thoughtfully, from all angles.

The artist is no stranger to the dance music realm, and the music industry at large. He’s been commissioned to deliver a number of high-profile installations, including murals at Las Vegas’ XS Nightclub and Miami’s Ultra Music Festival. His most sensational work, however, is predicated on the creation of colorful words for iconic pop culture icons and characters, with the monocle-toting Monopoly man as his de facto muse.
Though non-fungible tokens present a vastly different medium for the canvas artist, Monopoly says learning to develop them evokes similar feelings to when he first started painting. «When I was a kid first starting to paint, I was all excited,» he admitted. «I was having butterflies, I was nervous. On the other hand Andon recognizes that the NFT space, which has experienced a meteoric rise in popularity and attracted the world’s biggest artists and celebrities, is rapidly becoming oversaturated. While many NFTs have fetched jaw-dropping sums, ostensibly trading off of artists’ names alone, ArtGrails is betting on demand for rare, curated collaborations as a means for driving long-term value.

Andon says that to his surprise, organic collaborations such as the Ozuna and Alec Monopoly collection seem to be falling into his lap. In its short time in business, ArtGrails has already produced a bevy of perfect matches, including a recent joint NFT drop between rapper Internet Money and visual artist Mister E, who has made his name by painting elaborate pictures of money.
«In my opinion an incredible NFT release brings together artists or brands from multiple worlds and connecting them in a way that would not have otherwise been possible,» Andon says. «Alec connecting with Ozuna would not have made sense for a painting, but in this new medium it makes sense. » Andon dissects that statement further, explaining that NFTs uniquely appeal to a younger, increasingly online audience, rather than the traditional art collector.
His new ArtGrails platform defines itself as a «standalone Blue Chip NFT (Non-Fungible Tokens) Platform. » The term «grails» specifically derives from the world of rare collectibles, such as watches and sneakers, and harkens to the world’s most coveted assets.
«If I did my job correctly people would be able to go to our site and know that whatever is being released that week is worth paying attention to,» Andon said.
The swift and ubiquitous gravitation to NFTs by collectors has precipitated countless new questions relative to the future of art and the role it will play in society. Though he believes NFTs are here to stay, Monopoly does not see the technology rendering traditional art obsolete. «People ask, ‘Is the future of art collecting digital?’ And I don’t think so at all,» he asserted. «I don’t think people are buying less canvas art because they’re buying NFTs, which is exciting because it gives us two different markets to explore
So what does the evolution of the NFT space look like? Monopoly and Andon agree it will embrace more of a social component, and they’re already striving to remain ahead of the curve.
ArtGrails’ next release is a collaboration between Diamond Supply Co. and Grammy-nominated hip-hop artist Wale, which is slated to drop on March 31st.

AM : J’ai longtemps été anonyme, comme Banksy, j’avais un foulard pour me masquer le visage. J’étais anonyme pour cacher mon visage et éviter de me faire repérer par la police quand j’ai débuté dans les rues de New York. Aujourd’hui j’ai décidé de révéler mon visage, car je suis reconnu dans le monde de l’art et je me dis qu’il n’y a plus lieu de rester anonyme. Néanmoins, cela m’a valu quelques problèmes avec les autorités.

AM : J’aurais aimé être Satoshi Nakamoto, mais non, ce n’est pas moi ! En fait, je n’avais même pas fait le rapprochement avant notre échange.
Comment t’es-tu intéressé à l’univers crypto et aux NFT ?
AM : Mon art et les sujets que je mets en avant dans mes œuvres autour de la finance et du personnage de Mister Monopoly sont très parlants pour les crypto-investisseurs qui se reconnaissent dans mon travail. En fait, il y a même de nombreuses « crypto whales » qui collectionnent mes peintures. Encore une fois, il y a de nombreuses similitudes entre le monde du street art et le monde des cryptos. La recherche d’anonymat est un bon exemple.
J’ai vu que tu avais déjà réalisé quelques projets NFT. Peux-tu nous parler des premiers travaux NFT que tu as pu réaliser ?
AM : Je me suis mis très tôt aux NFT, dès 2019, alors que la tendance et le phénomène NFT que l’on connaît aujourd’hui n’existaient pas encore. Le NFT de cette époque était juste un de mes dessins qui a été vendu pour une œuvre caritative. Puis, en 2020, j’ai fait une collaboration avec l’artiste Ozuna. On a mis en scène son personnage d’ourson et le personnage de Mister Monopoly pour une collection qui a été un vrai succès, rapidement sold out. Maintenant, je vais bientôt annoncer officiellement le lancement d’une série NFT d’art génératif. Est-ce que tu es toi-même un collectionneur de NFT ?
AM : Oui totalement, je suis un grand collectionneur de NFT et je les apprécie comme des pièces d’art à part entière. Un de mes premiers NFT était issu de la collection de Gary V, un entrepreneur reconnu aux États-Unis qui a lancé sa collection Veefriends. J’ai aussi un Meebits que j’utilise depuis quelque temps comme photo de profil. J’aime le fait que l’on recherche des NFT qui soient représentatifs de notre personnalité et de nos propres caractéristiques. J’ai même acheté un NFT qui ressemblait à ma petite amie ! (Rires)
Tu es devenu incontournable auprès de nombreuses célébrités. Est-ce que tes amis suivent comme toi les NFT ?
AM : Oui, beaucoup de mes amis sont aussi dans les NFT. Pour mon anniversaire, Logan Paul m’a offert un World Of Woman. Il y a aujourd’hui une véritable corrélation entre les NFT et l’évolution du monde de l’art, c’est assez fascinant à vivre.
J’ai pu voir que vous avez lancé votre propre plateforme de NFT « Artrail » avec ton frère. Peux-tu nous parler de ce projet, et est-ce que ta série NFT sera basée sur cette plateforme ?
AM : Artrail est un projet que je mène pour avoir ma propre plateforme NFT et permettre à mes amis de réaliser des drops sur une plateforme de confiance. Néanmoins, ce projet en lui-même est plus petit que la série que je vais bientôt annoncer. J’ai encore besoin d’étudier les différentes possibilités pour trouver la plateforme qui sera à la fois en mesure d’assurer la plus grande sécurité et capable de soutenir le pic de trafic au moment où les NFT seront mis en vente. C’est très important pour moi que tous ces éléments soient pris en compte pour que l’expérience soit la plus fluide et la plus sécurisée possible. Habituellement, quand je lance un nouveau projet, une nouvelle collaboration, les sites web ont du mal à suivre. Je souhaite donc m’assurer que tout se passe bien avec la série NFT.

C’est un personnage complètement original que j’ai créé et qui s’appelle « Lil Richie ». Il représente en quelque sorte le neveu de Mister Monopoly.
Quel message souhaites-tu faire passer avec cette collection ?
AM : Je souhaite que tout le monde puisse se reconnaître dans les personnages de la collection grâce aux différentes caractéristiques que j’ai intégrées. D’ailleurs, il y aura un personnage masculin avec Lil Richie, mais j’ai aussi intégré un personnage féminin qui ressemblera un peu à une nouvelle version de Jessica Rabbit.
Comment as-tu dû adapter la façon dont tu travailles pour créer les NFT ?
AM : Le travail des NFT nécessite de s’adapter, en effet. La création se fait maintenant sur iPad avec un Apple pencil. Même si les outils changent, la base artistique et l’idéologie restent les mêmes. J’ai créé tous les éléments de la série moi-même et je me suis entouré d’une équipe qui permet de créer l’art génératif.
Aujourd’hui, les NFT sont un formidable moyen de créer une communauté. Comment souhaites-tu entretenir ta communauté avec cette série ?
AM : Contrairement à de nombreux projets qui ne tiennent pas leurs promesses, je souhaite réellement pour ma part embarquer ma communauté, créer une véritable utilité pour les holders de mes pièces qui seront des œuvres d’art exclusives à part entière. Elles permettront également d’avoir immédiatement accès à des évènements exclusifs, dont le premier sera à Art Basel Miami au mois de décembre.
Est-ce que tes NFT seront disponibles dans le metaverse ?
AM : Oui, les NFT seront originellement en 2D, puis on pourra les convertir en NFT 3D pour les utiliser dans le metaverse. Mes équipes et moi travaillons actuellement pour développer une expérience complète dans ce nouvel univers. Le film Matrix a été la principale source d’inspiration pour ce projet, et je souhaite retranscrire cela pour les collectionneurs.
Alec, quel est le message que tu souhaites faire passer à tes fans qui nous lisent et qui attendent avec impatience le lancement de la série ?
AM : Mes œuvres d’art ont toujours été très chères et inaccessibles à la plupart de mes fans, et cette série NFT permettra à chacun de collectionner une de mes pièces et s’approprier une partie de mon travail.

How did you become interested in NFTs and the crypto space?
Crypto-investors often recognize some element of themselves in my work. My artwork and the subjects I highlight often revolve around finance and the character of Mister Monopoly which crypto-investors often find meaningful. In fact, there are many “Crypto Whales” who collect my paintings. Again, there are many similarities between the world of street art and the world of crypto. The search for anonymity is a good example.
I saw that you had already done some NFT projects. Can you tell us about the first NFT works you were able to do?
I got into NFT very early, back in 2019, when the trends and the NFT phenomenon that we know today did not exist. The NFT in 2019 was simply one of my designs that was sold for charity. Then, in 2020, I did a collaboration with the artist Ozuna. We staged his bear character and the character of Mister Monopoly for a collection that was a real success and quickly sold out. I will soon officially announce the launch of a generative art NFT project. Holders of my NFTs, which I made with Ozuna, will be entitled to exclusive access including advantages for the drop.
Are you an NFT collector yourself?
Yes totally, I am a big collector of NFTs and I appreciate them as pieces of art in their own right. One of my first NFTs was from the collection of Gary Vee, a well-known entrepreneur in the United States who launched his Veefriends collection. I also have a Meebits which I’ve been using as my profile picture for some time now. I like the fact that we look for NFTs that are representative of our personality and our own characteristics. I even bought an NFT that looked like my girlfriend! (laughs)
Yes, many of my friends are into NFTs as well. For my birthday, Logan Paul gave me a World Of Women NFT. Today there is a real correlation between NFTs and the evolution of the art world – it’s quite fascinating to experience.
I saw that you launched your own NFT platform “Artrail” with your brother. Can you tell us about this project and will your NFT series be released on this platform?
Artrail is a project that I created in order to have my own NFT platform; Artrail also allows my friends to release their NFT projects on a secure platform. However, this project itself is smaller than the series that I will soon announce. I still need to study the different possibilities in order to find the platform that will be able to deliver the greatest security and be able to support high traffic when the NFT gets listed. It is very important to me that all these elements are taken into account so that the experience is as smooth and secure as possible. Usually, when I start a new project or a new collaboration, the websites have a hard time keeping up. I want to make sure everything is good for this NFT project.
The upcoming NFT project
Can you now tell us more about your NFT project?
The upcoming project is a generative art series which I’ve been working on for a year now. It will revolve around a new character that I have been developing for five years. It’s a completely original character, which I created, and is called “Lil Richie”. He somehow represents the nephew of Mister Monopoly.
What message do you want to convey with this collection?
Thanks to the different characteristics that I have integrated into the collection, I want everyone to be able to recognize themselves in the characters. There will be a male character with Lil Richie, but I also integrated a female character who will look a bit like a new version of Jessica Rabbit.
How did you change the way you work in order to create the NFTs?
Some adaptations were made in order to create this series. The collection is created on an iPad with an Apple pencil. Even if the tools change, the artistic base and the ideology remain the same. I created all the elements of the series myself and surrounded myself with a team that made it possible to create generative art.
Today, NFTs are a great way to build a community. How do you want to build/maintain your community with this series?
Unlike many projects that don’t keep their promises, I really want to get my community on board. I want to create real utility for the holders of my pieces, which will be exclusive works of art in their own right. They will also allow immediate access to exclusive events, the first of which will be at Art Basel Miami in December.
Will your NFTs be available in the metaverse?
Yes, the NFTs will originally be in 2D and then we will convert them to 3D NFTs so they can be used in the metaverse. My team and I are currently working to develop a complete experience for this new universe. The Matrix movie was the main inspiration for this project, and I want to convey that for collectors.

Alec, what is the message you want to convey to your fans who read this and who are impatiently waiting for the launch of the series?
My works of art have always been very dear and inaccessible to most of my fans, this NFT series will allow everyone to collect one of my pieces and make some of my work their own.
