Three smart winners have managed to crack a puzzle created by Larva Labs, the creators of the popular non-fungible token (NFT) projects CryptoPunks and Meebits, obtaining a 64-digit string that turned out to be an Ethereum (ETH) private key for an address containing ETH 0.025 (USD 64) and the Meebit #2858.

One of the pieces, called Grail #11, an Autoglyph (a form of generative art), turned out to be from Larva Labs, which instantly made the NFT the most valuable piece in the drop.

On March 5, someone by the name of “iceman” in the Proof Collective chat room pointed out the strange pattern of L’s at the top of Grail #11, speculating whether it could mean anything.

“His message caught my eye right away, because that part of the image really did look separate from the main part of the artwork,» Badr said. «Also, the Ls weren’t in any kind of regular pattern, so they seemed more than ornamental.»

Unlike other rows, the top row consists of regular and upside-down L-shaped characters. Using the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII), Badr turned those characters into 0s and 1s and decrypted the message, which read, «SECRET IS IN THE PIG NUMBERS, LL.»

Subsequently, he recruited a couple of friends to help, one of whom was Apely.eth.

«So, while «LL» is the signature, «SECRET IS IN THE PIG NUMBERS» seemed like a clue pointing to a hidden treasure—which is exactly what it turned out to be,» Badr said. And given that the message came from Larva Labs, «the «pig» reference seemed like it had to mean the pig Meebits.»

After probing the pig NFTs, the team noticed that the pigs were wearing jerseys, each of which had one digit on it. They started exploring various options to interpret the numbers on the pig jerseys, including mod 2, intervals between the IDs, ASCII, base 32, and Caesar Ciphers, none of which worked.

«Finally, what worked is concatenating a hex string out of the 64 jersey numbers, and interpreting that as an Ethereum private key!» Badr said, adding that there was a pig Meebit prize along with ETH 0.025 in the corresponding account.

The pig NFT, known as Meebit #2858, has most recently fetched a bid of ETH 10.01 (USD 25,670).

Unstoppable Domains $65M Funding Round and Augmented Reality Hoodie Feature This Week

On July 28, Yuga Labs said that it would immediately start collecting a 5% royalty on all secondary sales of Meebits.

Web3 identity startup Unstoppable Domains has raised $65M in Series A funding. The round was led by Pantera Capital and values the company at $1B.

According to the website, more than 2.4M domains have been registered through the platform.

RTFKT Augmented Reality Hoodie

On July 21, RTFKT, the Nike-backed NFT studio behind the popular CloneX collection, released a collection of 8,888 NFTs that could be redeemed for physical apparel.

Holders could “forge” their hoodies from July 21 to 25, and the physical garments will contain NFC chips to link them to their companion NFTs.

Potatoz Top OpenSea Charts

9gag, once the Internet’s go-to for memes, is planning a foray into Web3 with Memeland, its own metaverse complete with a $MEME token.

The Potatoz is a collection of 9,999 “utility-enabled” NFTs that was released as a free mint on July 21. The NFTs are expected to serve as access passes to future Memeland drops and have generated over 6,400 ETH ($10.8M) in secondary sales on OpenSea, taking the top spot this week.

Potatoz #471, one of nine with the ‘Galaxy’ trait, sold for 16 ETH ($28,000) on July 24.

Ledger Genesis

The company behind the popular hardware wallet launched its NFT marketplace and curation platform, Ledger Market, on July 26. 10,000 Genesis Passes were sold at 0.3 ETH ($500) apiece and the collection minted out in less than a day.

Passes “will allow owners to redeem a limited edition Ledger Black-on-Black Nano X and have access to future drops.”

The cheapest pass is currently listed for 0.45 ETH ($750) and the collection has seen 2,700 ETH ($4.6M) in secondary sales in the two days since it launched.

State Of The Market

Sales volume ticked up to $208M in the week ending July 25.

Though volume in dollar terms was $12M higher than in the prior week, Ether’s 40% rally during the week makes the numbers look better than they really are.

Indeed, the number of transactions dropped 23% to 353,771.

Floor Prices

The floor prices of most collections were down this week as Ether surged.

One week after the launch of Meebits, its minting contract was attacked, stealing over $1 million in NFTs. Although the team suspended the minting and trading in time to stop it, the project’s trading volume was affected for half a year. It was only in January of this year that Meebits’ trading volume was restored. According to Footprint Analytics data, daily trading volume in January was as high as $400 million.

How Meebits Recovered After Attack

Meebits is a collection of 20,000 unique 3D voxel characters and is the third collection from the Larva Labs team. It was boosted by the popularity of the first CryptoPunks NFT collection and was able to generate over $550 million in sales for the team.

On March 12, Yuga Labs, the company behind BAYC, announced the acquisition of Larva Labs to develop the CryptoPunks and Meebits NFT IP series, which is basically the purchase of unlimited commercial rights.

This acquisition increased the average price of Meebits on the secondary market from 3.5 ETH to 7 ETH, while the Meebits series saw an increase in trading volume between March and April. Since then, daily trading volume has decreased due to the turmoil in the crypto market in May, but Meebits’ market cap has remained at approximately $730 million, an increase of 1,239.9% YoY.

Upgrade from 2D to 3D

Meebits are more like an upgraded version of CryptoPunks. CryptoPunks are pixelated 2D icons, while Meebits are voxel-rendered 3D characters, upgraded from head stickers to dynamic voxel puppets, consisting of a variety of commonly used NFT collectibles of different elements.

In addition, the biggest innovation of Meebits is that it changes from a static NFT to a dynamic NFT and becomes a real 3D character. Of course, as with CryptoPunks, what determines the value of Meebits is the order in which they are minted, with earlier ones usually being more valuable than later ones.

Footprint Analytics shows that in the first half of 2022, even with the volatility of the NFT crypto market, the average price of Meebits NFTs remained relatively stable.

This also means that Meebits are cheaper and easier to obtain for players who want to have pixelated avatars. However, in the order of casting as stated above, CryptoPunk is the earlier and far more valuable collection.

market got a jolt this week when surprise new entrant piling up massive Ethereum trading volume numbers. But as trading rises on the OpenSea rival, it has become clear that some traders are manipulating LooksRare’s token-based rewards system via a form of wash trading—and the platform doesn’t appear to mind.

For now, however, some traders appear eager to manipulate the rewards model. Over the course of the last day, LooksRare has seen numerous NFT trades that go back and forth between the same two wallets, including a NFT that sold for about $50 million worth of WETH each time. That’s $100 million worth of trading volume in two transactions.

Dozens of other and Meebits NFTs have sold for about $3 million worth of WETH apiece in numerous back-and-forth transactions, as seen on the top NFT sales list at CryptoSlam. By contrast, the average sale price of a Meebits NFT on leading marketplace OpenSea over the last week was about 4.1 ETH ($13,800 at today’s value), while Loot NFTs sold for an average of under 2.2 ETH ($7,400) each.

It’s a form of wash trading—that is, manipulating the market by making it look like there’s more activity than there would be organically. Wash trading can be used to boost demand for a financial asset or to hide ill-gotten gains from illicit activities, for example. Critics often accuse the NFT market of harboring widespread wash trading and money laundering.

In other words, traders aiming to manipulate LooksRare’s rewards system are betting that the rewards they receive in LOOKS tokens and WETH will be more valuable than the LooksRare transaction fees and Ethereum gas fees they’re spending in the process.

LooksRare’s team appears indifferent to the manipulation tactics—and arguably may be encouraging it.

One of the teams behind the fifth-largest NFT collection, in terms of all-time sales volume, Bored Ape Yacht Club, announced the acquisition of the IP tied to two other popular NFT collections. The two collections happen to be the Larva Labs’ issued Cryptopunks and Meebits collections.

‘What’s Good for Punks Is Good for Apes’

While BAYC is the fifth-largest NFT project by all-time sales volume (ATSV), dappradar.com NFT collection stats indicate Meebits holds the top ATSV record today with $7.54 billion in ATSV. Meebits’ sister project Cryptopunks is below the collection with $2.65 billion in ATSV, in comparison to BAYC’s ATSV which is ​​$1.41 billion. Yuga’s Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC) is the ninth-largest in terms of ATSV with $895.53 million at the time of writing.

“We believe that what’s good for Punks is good for Apes and the rest of the space. Likewise, what’s good for Apes is good for Punks. We want to grow the pie, not fight over slices,” Yuga’s announcement concludes.

Meebits reached an all-time high in average sales value in August 2021. By the end of the month, the average sale value was $21,425.89, a 93% spike from May 2021’s $11,046.26.

Meebits launched on May 4, 2021. At launch, each NFT could be bought for around 2.5 to 3 ETH. Additionally, 11,000 of 20,000 NFTs were given to holders of CryptoPunks because they have the same creator, Larva Labs.
