Ether Rock btw states in their website that the virtual rocks listed in the platform serve ‘NO PURPOSE’. Besides of course that one can buy, sell and boast about owing ‘em.

The platform is one amongst many Non Fungible Token projects that curates niche items/props and collectibles. The rocks hosted on the site are artwork taken from a clipart website. The project had a real sluggish start with a mere 30 rocks sold. However, post a tweet by influencer Gary Vaynerchuk, the prices spiked to $300,000 per rock! Some early buyers deemed the project a ‘stupid idea’ altogther. Some even went on explaining why Ether Rocks could be the best investment ever.
This tweet sums up the ‘validation’ artists, collectors and investors find in NFT projects.
As we get into an age of digital collectibles, being one of the earliest forms of the art and the first do something gives them provenance that is valuable. There is also a nostalgia aspect, collectors will seek early pieces with historical significance. (Continued)
