With a Polygon grant, Aloha NFT will launch “Alohachella” on February 22, featuring digital and physical collectables designed by Hawaii artists

Hawaii-based NFT marketplace Aloha NFT has scheduled its “genesis drop” for this week.

Dubbed “Alohachella,” the launch of its first major NFT collection is funded in part through a grant from Polygon Studios. It will involve artwork from 22 local artists and physical collectors’ cards as well as the digital versions.

“”I feel like crypto and NFTs are here now, and we must provide a platform for our artists, community and especially, our children, to engage and create,” said John Prime, who co-founded Aloha NFT with Daniel Kim and Ka’iulani Kauihou.

Prime also founded 808 Urban.

“Despite Hawaiʻi’s limitations on crypto exchanges, Aloha NFT has found a way to provide local collectors a fun and engaging way to access NFTs,” added Kauihou, founder of Hawaii publishing company Hiʻohia.

“We want local artists and collectors to participate in the NFT movement by making NFTs easy and accessible through physical NFT redemption cards,” explained Kim, founder of NFT4Good. “This allows users of all levels to participate in collecting NFTs that may or may not have an existing crypto wallet.”

The physical cards, powered by Meteor NFT, feature QR codes to facilitate redemption.

The “Alohachella” launch is made possible through Polygon Studios, the NFT arm of the layer-two Ethereum scaling network called Polygon (MATIC). The studio, which debuted last July, is committing $100 million to projects utilizing the Polygon blockchain.

Aloha NFT launched in April 2021 with a mission to help the next generation of local creatives in Hawaii “share their aloha” with the rest of the world, utilizing blockchain technology.

“Alohachella” Launch Details

• The collection will drop at 2:22 p.m. on February 22, 2022 at AlohaNFT.com.
• NFTs will sell for $30 each and will be issued through a redeemable physical collectors’ card.
• 22 NFT art pieces with 100 editions each will be made available.
• Five rare holographic versions of each NFT will be randomly minted.
• 80 percent of profits go directly back to the participating Hawaii artists.
• 10 percent of profits will be donated to a local Hawaii charity.

NFTs are an idea elusive even to Island artists tiptoeing into their uncharted waters.

The art world is all agog about NFTs. And so is tech-savvy Hawai‘i, to judge from artist Shar Tuiasoa’s experience on a recent Hawai‘i Island staycation. “That whole resort area,” she says, “all we overheard everyone talking about was NFTs, trading NFTs, dropping NFTs.” That Tuiasoa had just minted her first two—uploaded encrypted digital objects on platform MakersPlace—made it all the more remarkable, if eerie.

Niu Valley artist Dennis Mathewson can sympathize. “My top 50 friends who are artists are just afraid of NFTs,” he says. “And I’m not good with this stuff. But, personally, I’ve been a businessperson all my life. Survival was the issue, the question always, well, what kind of art will I be selling next year?”

For Mathewson, NFTs are no different than when he made and sold airbrushed T-shirts at E.K. Fernandez carnivals, car shows and Easterseals fundraisers. “That was our life, what we brought to Hawai‘i in the 1980s. After that it was whales and dolphins,” often with fellow muralists Robert Wyland and Christian Riese Lassen.

“It’s a fascinating phenomenon,” says Makiki’s Gordy Grundy, who started global website Art Report Today just as NFTs were taking off three years ago and consequently chronicled their rise. “It keeps growing in unusual ways. Whole languages have been created out of NFTs, millions of artifacts.”

In January Mathewson was on the cusp of launching his NFT collection. Wong and his collaborators minted and sold 8,008 NFTs, worth nearly $8 million in crypto by day’s end. Tuiasoa sold her second NFT. “It was the easiest grand I ever made,” she says. “Crypto, NFTs, it’s all happening whether I participate or not. I want to figure it out, see how it feels, and drop another collection.”

But beyond the obvious romanticism of a dwelling built in the canopy, the inclusion of solar panels, water catchment, aquaponics, and green roof systems make each composition relevant to the environmental issues of today. Wooden Wave has painted murals across Hawaii and the continental United States. They also specialize in illustration and design, having done logos and apparel images for a variety of clients including comedian George Lopez and boxer Floyd Mayweather. Worldwide Walls Hawaii (formerly known as POW! WOW!, the Hawaii-based organization of global street art fame) is hosting its first NFT-based gallery on MakersPlace. Through the “NFT for Good” initiative, Worldwide Walls Hawaii receives a donation amount of up to 10% from the proceeds and will administer a community beautification project in underserved neighborhoods next year.

Worldwide Walls plans to adorn public housing, community centers, and schools with new murals, primarily in the Kalihi-Palama areas. Five local Hawaiian artists – the artworks are rJasper Wong, Lucky Olelo, Shar dr free drrr, Woes and Wooden Wave – were selectedr to participate in this inaugural collaboration with MakersPlace.
