What are non-fungible tokens?

Non-fungible tokens are digital assets that contain identifying information recorded in smart contracts.

It’s this information that makes each NFT unique, and as such, they cannot be directly replaced by another token. They cannot be swapped like for like, as no two NFTs are alike. Banknotes, in contrast, can be simply exchanged one for another; if they hold the same value, there is no difference to the holder between, say, one dollar bill and another.

Bitcoin is a fungible token. You can send someone one Bitcoin and they can send one back, and you still have one Bitcoin. (Of course, the value of Bitcoin might change during the time of exchange. ) You can also send or receive smaller amounts of one Bitcoin, measured in satoshis (think of satoshis as cents of a Bitcoin), since fungible tokens are divisible.

Typically, non-fungible tokens are not divisible, in the same way that you cannot send someone part of a concert ticket; part of a concert ticket wouldn’t be worth anything on its own and would not be redeemable. However, in recent months some investors have experimented with the concept of fractionalized NFTs, though they remain a legal grey area and could be seen as securities.

What makes NFTs so special?

Non-fungible tokens have unique attributes; they are usually linked to a specific asset. They can be used to prove the ownership of digital items like game skins right through to the ownership of physical assets.

Other tokens are fungible, in the same way as coins or banknotes. Fungible tokens are identical, they have the same attributes and value when exchanged.

In March 2021, digital artist Beeple sold an NFT collage of his work for $69 million, making him the third most expensive living artist at auction, after David Hockney and Jeff Koons.

How are non-fungible tokens used?

As well as representing digital collectibles like CryptoKitties, NBA Top Shot and Sorare, non-fungible tokens can be used for digital assets that need to be differentiated from each other in order to prove their value, or scarcity. They can represent everything from virtual land parcels to artworks, to ownership licenses.

How do NFTs work?

Tokens like Bitcoin and Ethereum-based ERC-20 tokens are fungible. Ethereum’s non-fungible token standard, as used by platforms such as CryptoKitties and Decentraland, is ERC-721.

How to buy NFT tokens

Non-fungible tokens can be purchased on a huge number of NFT marketplaces, including OpenSea, Rarible, and SuperRare.

Here’s how to get your digital hands on some using Rarible:

Step 1: Head over to the Rarible website and click the ‘Connect’ button on the top right. From here, select the wallet you want to connect to the platform and log in.

You’ll need to accept the terms of service before you can log in.

In our example, we’ll connect using Metamask, a popular web and mobile wallet.

Step 2: Once logged in, search the platform for the NFT you’re looking to purchase.

In our example, we’ll show how you might purchase ‘Hand of Fate’ by Jango. The process will be similar regardless of which NFT you wish to purchase (assuming it is available to purchase outright).

Once you’ve selected the NFT you wish to purchase, click the ‘Buy now’ button.

Step 3: A confirmation window will pop up, asking you to double-check the details of the order.

If you’re happy to continue, click the ‘Proceed to payment’ button to move ahead to the final step.

Step 4: Your wallet click will then pop up asking you to confirm the transaction. Again, if you’re happy to continue, simply confirm the transaction and it will be processed.

Once it has confirmed, your NFT will be deposited directly to your Ethereum address and will be yours to keep.

Note: you may want to avoid buying your NFTs during peak times—otherwise you may end up with an inordinately high gas fee (as per our example below).

CryptoPunks

Dating back to 2017, profile picture (PFP) series CryptoPunks is one of the earliest NFT projects in existence. Created by development studio Larva Labs, CryptoPunks are a series of 10,000 24×24 pixel art images depicting «punks» with randomized attributes, including gender, headgear and eyewear.

Originally released for free, CryptoPunks now command huge sums; at time of writing, the cheapest punks are on offer for six-figure sums, while the rarest punks, including aliens, apes and zombies, sell for millions of dollars. Even payments giant Visa has got in on the action, snapping up CryptoPunk #7610 as part of its collection of «historic commerce artefacts».

Bored Ape Yacht Club

Like CryptoPunks, Bored Ape Yacht Club is a series of NFT avatars—in this case, taking the form of disinterested-looking apes. And, also like CryptoPunks, there are 10,000 of them, each one has a randomly generated set of attributes, and a thriving community has sprung up around them.

Perhaps most importantly, owning a Bored Ape NFT makes you eligible for drops of additional NFTs, such as Bored Ape Kennel Club (a series of dog NFTs), and Mutant Ape Yacht Club (a series of, er, mutant apes). Think of it as a ticket to an exclusive club that offers perks for members.

That exclusive club has become increasingly exclusive in the past year, with a growing number of celebrities scooping up Bored Apes—including Eminem, Snoop Dogg and Stephen Curry. Like CryptoPunks’ Larva Labs, Bored Ape Yacht Club creator Yuga Labs has secured Hollywood representation, with an eye on extending the brand into film, TV and other entertainment formats.

In December 2021, the floor price of Bored Ape NFTs overtook that of CryptoPunks for the first time, a mark of the PFP collection’s growing popularity.

NFTs and DeFi

Non-fungible tokens are also making waves in one of cryptocurrency’s most intriguing and innovative spaces, the decentralized finance (DeFi) space.

One example of how NFTs are being used in DeFi is Aavegotchi, an experimental startup funded by DeFi money market Aave. Aavegotchis are NFT crypto-collectibles used in a game universe; every Aavegotchi also has Aave’s aTokens staked inside them as collateral, meaning that each one generates yield on Aave. If the owner liquidates their stake, the Aavegotchi disappears.

In July 2020, Rarible launched RARI, a governance token that’s used to reward creators and collectors; it can only be earned through active participation on the platform, a process Rarible terms «marketplace liquidity mining

Recent developments

The NFT space grew explosively in 2021, with trading volumes in Q3 hitting $10. 67 billion, according to DappRadar—a year-over-year increase of over 38,000%. In August, top NFT marketplace OpenSea recorded trading volume of over $75 million in a single day—more than its entire trading volume in 2020.

Big money was accompanied by ever-bigger names, as artists and celebrities rode the wave of enthusiasm for NFTs. Rapper Snoop Dogg outed himself as an NFT collector and released NFT tickets for a party in crypto game The Sandbox; Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis launched their Stoner Cats cartoon as an NFT; and NFL star Tom Brady launched his own NFT platform, Autograph.

The future of NFTs

For gaming, non-fungible tokens could be used to represent in-game items like skins, potentially allowing them to be ported to new games or traded with other players.

Further application of non-fungible tokens could include certification for qualifications, software licensing, warranties, and even birth and death certificates. The smart contract of a non-fungible token immutably proves the identity of the recipient or owner and could be stored in a digital wallet for ease of access and representation. One day, our digital wallets could contain proof of every certificate, license, and asset, we own.

Putting NFTs on display around your home or in a gallery requires more effort than hanging a physical work, but the results are often dazzling. NFT pioneers around the world have developed some pretty unique ways of sharing their collections using both analog and digital tools. Let’s explore how they’re doing it.

Digital Frames

Digital photo and video frames have come a long way in the past decade and many crypto art collectors have looked to these devices as a way of bringing NFTs to life on their walls. These frames come in all shapes and sizes and prices are all over the board.

The Video Print from Infinite Objects loops a single NFT on repeat

The Infinite Objects «Video Print» is a digital frame unlike any on this list. The company’s 5″ and 7” displays feature one video that loops on repeat forever. There are no apps or additional software involved. When purchasing the frame, Infinite Objects gives buyers the option to upload their own video that is then inserted into a frame before shipping.

This makes it easy to add any NFT from your collection (or somebody else’s for that matter) to an Infinite Objects frame as long as you have the video file saved to your device. Prices start at $79 for a custom frame with a 854×480 display.

Netgear, a company better known for their contributions to home WiFi than high art is behind the high-end Meural Canvas frame. These versatile digital frames are available in a range of sizes from the desktop friendly 13. 5” x 7. 5” to a gallery sized 19” x 29” canvas. Owners can use Netlink’s proprietary Meural app for iOS and Android to add NFT images and videos to the frame.

One of the best features of the Meural app is the playlist feature that cycles through your digital art however you choose. I also really like the Meural’s fullscreen and letterbox display modes that give you more choice over how your art appears on the wall. The frame is on the expensive side with prices starting at $249 for a 1920 x 1080p display.

Dragon Touch Digital Picture Frame

The Dragon Touch Digital Picture Frame is a cost effective digital frame

The Dragon Touch Digital Picture Frame is the cheapest and most accessible digital frame for displaying NFTs on this list. That’s because the Dragon Touch is designed as a standard household digital picture frame meant for cycling through photos of family and friends.

That doesn’t mean it can’t handle your crypto art collection though. Unlike many cheaper digital frames, the Dragon Touch supports both images and videos up to 30 seconds in length that you add through a third party app. With 16GB of onboard storage and a 1280×800 resolution, the Dragon Touch is a great package for $125

Looking Glass Portrait

The Looking Glass Portrait is a bleeding-edge piece of hardware that acts as a display for holograms. The device makes it simple to turn any piece of 3D content into a functioning hologram. This previously hasn’t been possible without the use of VR headsets or expensive production-level equipment like they used for the Tupac hologram at Coachella.

While the Looking Glass certainly won’t support every NFT, I can see more 3D pieces coming in the future that could take advantage of this tech. One example is this NFT minted by artist Reggie Watts that came with the device included. The Looking Glass is currently available for pre-order with a discounted price of $250.

The MonoX7 is an internet-connected digital art display

The MonoX7 is a digital frame that feels designed with the digital art renaissance in mind. The internet-connected device features an ultra-thin 17. 3-inch display and includes a dedicated processor making it a powerful force on your wall. The display handles any image or video that can play in a web browser making it perfect for all types of NFTs and formats.

Despite the hefty price point of the MonoX7, I could see it quickly becoming a new standard for NFT collectors looking for an elegant solution to display all of their digital art in a physical space. The base model with a 1080 x 1920 display starts at $599.

The DIY approach involves printing still images of your NFTs (so this won’t work for looping videos or other formats) and creating a custom art label similar to the ones featured next to prominent works in museums. Andrew’s label features information like the title of the piece, the artist, when he purchased it, and a handy QR Code that links to an informational page about the NFT on the OpenSea marketplace.

It’s a cheap and elegant solution (Andrew made his for less than $20) for collectors who don’t want more screen time in their day to day lives. I can definitely see more galleries adopting this format for NFT events in real life too.

Displaying NFTs Online

Crypto Art is a format born of the internet so it makes perfect sense that you’ll currently find far more options for displaying your NFTs online than IRL at this point.

Keeping an online collection of your digital art is in most cases significantly cheaper than displaying it in your home and more people around the world are likely to see it here too. Let’s take a look at a few of the existing options.

NFT Galleries

Showtime wants to position itself as the first NFT social network and is doing a pretty great job so far. After connecting your crypto wallet to the site, Showtime instantly generates an aesthetic profile that prominently features all of the NFTs in your collection.

A collector’s page on Lazy

A new entry in the crypto art space, Lazy is an online NFT art gallery launched by Shark Tank investor Mark Cuban. The site, which is currently in beta, lives up to its name by providing a simple and uninspired way for collectors to display their NFTs online.

At the moment, Lazy very much feels like a work in progress. The site lacks all of the key social features found in Showtime and only offers collectors a simple page to display their NFTs. That makes it hard to recommend Lazy right now, but I’m hopeful the site can stop living up to its name and add more interesting ways to interact with NFTs in the near future.

OpenSea is the largest NFT marketplace online today and that also makes it one of the best places to display your crypto art collection. The site provides a seamless experience for both shopping for art and looking at the works collected by other NFT enthusiasts.

Decentraland is already a regular destination for prolific NFT collectors and features frequent gallery shows where artists and curators can show off their latest work in awe-inspiring museum settings. Decentraland players can easily connect with artists and purchase new NFTs without ever stepping foot outside of the game world. Virtual space in Decentraland gets pretty pricey, but putting your NFTs on display is relatively simple once you get setup with your first patch of land.

How to Resize an NFT for Display

However you decide to display your digital art, you’ll need to do some work to get those NFTs fitting in each digital frame or space. Kapwing’s free online editor is the perfect tool for resizing any video, image, or GIF without needing any additional software.

In this tutorial, I’ll quickly show you how to resize a video associated with an NFT to make it fit in a digital picture frame.

• Export, download, and put on display

When you purchase an NFT, you generally get access to a file containing the original image or video of the associated art or collectible. Start by downloading that video or image to your device.

In this example, I’m downloading a file from a Google Drive link that was provided when I purchased an NFT on Rarible.

Now that your video or image is saved, head over to the Kapwing Studio Editor and click Get Started. On the next screen, click the upload button and locate the your NFT file on your device. In just a few moments, your NFT will appear in Kapwing.

Once the file is fully uploaded, you’re all set to resize it. It’s important to know the correct dimensions for the frame or place where you’ll be displaying the NFT. This can usually be found in the settings or packaging of digital frames.

For this example, I’m going to resize my NFT to the dimensions required for the 1280×800 resolution Dragon Touch Digital Picture Frame I mentioned above. On the right side of the screen, click the Custom Size button that appears in the canvas menu.

In the next screen, you can set the custom width and height dimensions for your NFT. Click Done when you are ready and your video or image should instantly resize to your desired dimensions.

Export, download, and put on display

Take a moment to review your resized NFT. Does it look correct for the frame or display method you had in mind? Are you happy with how it’s cropped and the centering? You can continue to make edits and move your NFT around in the canvas until things look exactly like you imagined.

Once your NFT is perfect, click the big red Export button in the top right corner of the screen. Kapwing will take a moment and automatically process your video to your desired specifications. Once the video is finished processing, click the Download button to save the resized version to your device.

You’re now ready to put your resized NFT on display with the confidence that it’ll accurately fit the frame, screen, or digital space you’ve designated for it.

Simplest Explanation to Understand NFTs

NFT expert Matt Garcia wrote the most comprehensive guide for beginners to understand NFTs and how the market works. The ebook claims to teach you everything you need to know in 15 minutes. In my personal experience, it took half an hour, but that’s because the brain needs to settle in while learning new concepts.

Garcia stays away from jargon in his book and employs a conversational tone rather than a teaching tone. It works well to make new concepts seem easier to understand, especially with examples of real-world analogies. At some points, you might need to google what he’s talking about, but you’ll never need more than a quick online reference.

Best YouTube Channel to Learn About NFTs

Given the rise of NFTs in the recent past, it’s no surprise that many YouTube creators are jumping on the bandwagon to explain what it’s all about. They’re not necessarily experts on the subject though, nor dedicate a channel to it. The exception is Mr. Fungible and his channel NFT Times.

Fungible is a digital marketer, and the channel’s main aim is to help creators learn how to create, promote, and sell NFTs. He gives a nice mix of practical advice, applying insights from digital marketing to the new land of NFTs. Largely, his videos fall into one of four playlists: how to sell NFT artwork, the best NFT platforms, NFT opportunities, and NFT Facts.

Of these, the last one is aimed more at education and is useful even for beginners. So, please take the NFT opportunities with a pinch of salt and do your own research rather than investing based on one person’s advice.

Free Resources to Learn How to Create NFTs

Most of the online explanations on NFTs deal with it as a buyer, collector, or investor. But if you’re an artist trying to sell your digital creations, how do you go about making it happen? How to NFT is a collection of resources for creators to learn how to mint NFTs.

The developers aim to empower creators with simple ways to make their own NFT item and sell it. Currently, a screenshot guide is only available for Mintable, but they seem to have upcoming spaces for Rarible, OpenSea, SuperRare, and Foundation.

Online Forums and Discussion Boards for NFT Talk

Where do you go if you want to ask a question about NFTs? Two forums provide most of the answers you’ll need.

Forum NFT is a simple question-answer board. Register for the site to post a new question or answer an existing one. You can quickly sort the current discussions by most answered, most visited, most voted, recent, no answers, and bumped questions. You can also sort topics by tags in the sidebar. It’s a pretty new community but seems to be gaining traction as a place for beginners to ask questions about NFTs freely.

NFT Origin Stories and Edge of NFT (Podcast)

The NFT industry is shaped by digital creators and influential traders. Given that it is still in its nascent stage, the more you learn about the people involved in the industry, the better you will understand how it is growing and changing. Two podcasts are doing a great job of speaking to the people to find out more.

In NFT Origin Stories, hosts RD and Parrot speak to digital artists to understand the history behind their NFTs. After all, you can’t separate the art from the artist entirely, so the more you know, the more you’ll appreciate it. It’s beneficial for creators to learn how others got started, but it’s also insightful for investors. They also sometimes do livestreams to discuss the latest in NFTs, which is educational in itself.

In Edge of NFT, hosts Eathen Janney, Jeff Kelley, and Joshua Kriger speak to various players on how they are using NFTs in new ways. It’s a fascinating series of interviews on different NFT topics, like gaming, music, virtual horse racing, charity, and so much more.

NFTs Are Exciting, But Tread With Caution

Once you understand the value of NFTs and why they are being seen as the future of collectible items, it’s easy to get swept up in the buzz. But be careful. Right now, this is still a new phenomenon, and the NFT market has seen collapses already.

Картину сначала оцифровали, а потом сожгли во время трансляции. Таким образом, физического воплощения работы автора больше не осталось. Теперь черно-белое произведение будет существовать лишь в цифровом пространстве. Эксперты считают, что такой ход вполне оправдан: факт уничтожения бумажного экземпляра картины лишь повышает стоимость цифрового варианта произведения.

Как переводят файлы в NFT-токены

Существуют специальные платформы, которые работают с невзаимозаменяемыми токенами. Самые популярные из них это OpenSea, Rarible и Mintable. На этих площадках можно покупать и продавать уникальные токены.

Чтобы перевести файл в NFT, потребуется наличие виртуального кошелька на блокчейн-платформе Ethereum.
