Only half a year after it launched, the project has created a community on their own in the spirit of CC0 and public domain. These stick figures have been everywhere from a billboard in Times Square to starring in their own film. The community is even building the 3D mferverse. Sartoshi has started a movement, all in the spirit of Web3.

But as of June 9, 2022, Sartoshi is no more — and they’re handing the reins over to the mfer collectors themselves.

Mfers have been in the spotlight recently.

Fast forward a couple of weeks, and the new platform is up and running at mfers.cool.

It offers 0% marketplace fees, supporting all three collections directly affiliated with Sartoshi: mfers, CREYZIES (an official airdrop that happened on 4/20) and end of sartoshi (an open mint edition that sartoshi announced along with their departure).

Notably, all purchases are still charged with the 5% royalty fee that goes directly to the community treasury, sartoshi, and other involved parties via the splitter contract they described in their last public note.

That means trading on mfers.cool is beneficial for both the traders and the community.

In their farewell blog post, Sartoshi included tweets that actually predicted it.

Breaking down the end of sartoshiIn the blog post, sartoshi outlines the steps that will be taking place to transfer ownership of the mfers smart contract to its community of holders. Basically, sartoshi is transferring ownership of the smart contract to the unofficial mfers multi-sig wallet.To clarify, after mfers dropped in late 2021, a group of mfer holders created an unofficial mfers Discord, and a multi-sig gnosis safe to operate as an unofficial project treasury. Now, after staying away from the process to allow the community to dictate its direction, sartoshi is essentially giving those OG mfer holders control of the project.

For the NFT community members who loved what mfers represented, the move from sartoshi was an act of genius. On one hand, it mimics the story of Satoshi Nakamoto. the origin traces to my entry to the world of nfts

then it all hit hyperspace.

meanwhile i tweeted jokes and memes and pointed out absurdities not only of the real world but of the nft world too. some stuff was just so over the top, like everyone always saying the nft they just got was the most amazing art they had every laid eyes upon as if they had seen a miracle. so i’d say stuff like this: “omg the art is amazing” — “ser you’re at a grocery store and that’s a box of cereal.”

what if we all have that motherfucker inside of us? we’re all degens in our own way, sitting at a computer and navigating a new world..artists, collectors, investors, gamers, teachers, whatever. what if an nft collection could capture that feeling so anyone could be their mfer inside? this is what inspired the mfers collection. now what size collection would it be? i think gmoney had once said that punks and bored apes could really resonate as 10k collections bc that number fits well with generating a community of owners. (aside: i totally missed bayc btw — i had just gotten into punks before bayc launched and simply missed the frickin boat (yacht) — what bayc has done is mindblowing). anyway i started sketching out stick figures for a 10k collection of mfers.

after about 6969 messages with santana at westcoast after i kept changing the art we were ready to launch nov 30, 2021. mint price was set at 0.069E, and the first time i mentioned the project to anyone was in a tweet the day before mint, with a link to the minting page at mfers.art. there was no whitelist, no honoraries, no paid promos, no nothing. the site went live at 420pm (obv.) and they sold out in minutes—i was thankful and excited to see what a world with mfers might be like.

i tweeted recently that “you can state a roadmap that says where you will go, but you can also plant seeds and see where they grow” — the seeds are all around now, and we will see where they grow. it’s very early. this philosophy explains many of my responses to comments i get all the time:

Why did you decide to get into mfers?

My friend minted them and told me about them. At the time I was too busy in other communities to pay much attention, then we hit a dry spell in the NFT space and I finally got some time to look them up. I really fell in love.

They are the simplest yet most effective PFP representation of someone in the NFT space.

Some of my favorite traits are the Hoodie, Monochrome beanie, Gold Rollie watch, purple shades and naked (no clothes).

Would you say that mfers is the vibiest PFP project in the space right now?

Vibiest is definitely subjective but I do believe they are up there. I think they are amongst the few that the art as a PFP never gets old and represents people perfectly. That’s why they vibe so hard.

What is the coolest mfer community initiative, in your opinion?

Some IRL meetups have been great initiatives done by the community, although I’m most excited to see how we come together, learn and build out this new era of mfers, likely transitioning into a fully decentralized, community-led DAO of sorts.

What do you think about Sartoshi’s departure?

Many OG mfers and community members knew this was likely coming, we just didn’t know when. Sartoshi always had the vibe that he was going to disappear like satoshi.

I also think he should have completely renounced his royalties in perpetuity to fully hand over the project to the community. I know many might have mixed opinions on this.

Overall, I believe this is how mfers was always going to play out and i’m happy to be here as it evolves. Now we are all sartoshi. We just mfers.

Mfers CC0 Community

Mfers join many other NFT projects in offering a license of CC0, or public domain, on the artwork. This means that anyone can use the mfers art for commercial usage, whether they own it or not. Some other popular CC0 projects include Cryptoadz by Gremplin, Goblintown, Nouns, Blitmap, Forgotten Runes Wizards Cult, Chain Runners and more.

By implementing this, the community can be built organically with no limits on who is able to use the art. There is no permission needed to create derivatives, merch, songs, books, films, and more. More are being made by the nearly 5,600 unique collectors as this is written.

Animated mfers launched their own news channel series. Mfer Radio brings like-minded collectors together all over the world. Mfer studios is making a movie. There is even an mferverse offering a 3D version of holders’ characters.

Mfers NFT Traits

These NFTs are based off the smoking stick figure in the “Are Ya Winning Son?” meme. Sartoshi made it their profile picture and got to thinking: what if they made 10,000 of these stick figures? Many of them have this same cigarette in their mouth as the original meme does.

There are five types of mfers, the rarest being Alien with only nine in existence. There are also 28 Apes and 89 Zombies, taking inspiration from the Cryptopunks collection. 15 categories of attributes can be mixed up to create an mfer.

These traits include headphones, watches, slight smiles, sunglasses, pipes, mohawks, and more. There are male- and female-presenting mfers, so everyone can find one that fits their Web3 personality.

The highest the floor ever reached was 5.77 Ethereum in February 2022. The floor was 2.4 Ethereum before the announcement of sartoshi handing the project to the community, but the floor dipped to 1.8 afterward. The highest selling to date was a rare Alien sold for 80 Ethereum, or about $226,000 at the time. It sold on March 3, 2022.

Sartoshi recently announced “the end of Sartoshi” as they passed along ownership of mfers to community leaders, including royalties.

The spirit and simplicity of these stick figures has struck a chord with thousands in the NFT community. The power of memes and CC0 collections should not go unnoticed, as we have seen time and time again that they bring people together.

The future of the project is now in the hands of the mfer holders. Will they be able to persist without the direct ties to Sartoshi? They already have a strong start with an organic community — only time will tell.

How did you end up owning a mfer?

After getting burned with some NFTs I bought on advice of a past friend of mine, I tried to approach NFTs similarly to how I approach the crypto market—by identifying the key values to invest in. I ended up searching for projects whose creators have the potential to grow a community organically. I watched videos from “Giancarlo buys Tokens” on YouTube as well as the “Nifty Alpha Podcast” to improve my understanding of NFTs and eventually stumbled upon mfers and sartoshi.

I liked sartoshi’s light hearted vibes, since I always enjoyed a good meme.

It was still a dark time for myself, because all my past purchases went to doomtown so I was debating if I should invest or not. All in all, mfers seemed to be a fit, and I decided to take the risk and bought my mfer when the floor was around 0.17 ETH. This little guy looked funny with an everlasting smile as if nothing could destroy his optimism.

As for the traits, I have three favorite ones.

What makes mfers stand out as a community?

I believe mfers are unique, because there is no specific group/person that is supposed to work on a specific topic. Anyone can work on anything.

With mfers, you don’t have to be an active member or a discord mod to be appreciated. You don’t have to be funny, you don’t have to be analytical. You can just be yourself and try to contribute with what you can —and the community will most likely welcome you for who you are.

What do you think about Sartoshi’s exit?

I believe it was a necessary step for the longevity of mfers.

Tell us how you joined the community.

I missed out on mint (funny story for another time lol) so I ended up picking up on secondary shortly after. Bought a second mfer shortly after that. Still stacking lol.

Everyone was just doing whatever they wanted and we were figuring it out as we went. I think that’s still the underbelly of the mfers community, certainly from the «unofficial mfers» angle. There’s a great deal of culture and provenance and ethos here and it’s why I continue to stick around and play in the sandbox with mfers, and will continue to 🙂

What’s your favorite trait?

Changes every day lol. Probably the silly simple smile is my fave trait, and paired with the black smoke is my fave combo.

What makes mfers vibe as a project?

As someone involved in the mfer community so much, what can you tell us about it?

Tough question! You’d get a different answer from absolutely everyone — so i’ll answer from the «unofficial mfers» perspective (side note the large and growing Chinese and Korean mfer communities have some incredible culture and well-established, nuanced memetics as well).

The mfer community has a large, varied, and creative worldview — i attribute this to Sartoshi, the artist and personality behind the images, having kept their opinions, if any, away from the mfers project; instead pushing the «mfers do what they want» narrative that we are steeped in. It leaves room for pretty much anyone to join in and immediately feel welcome and find other mfers they vibe with.  Hop in to any rooftopDAO party or Code Club session with mfers — you’ll see what I mean (non-holders are also welcome at these events 🙂 ).

What is Mfers NFT?

Mfers is a collection of 10.000 NFTs, each algorithmically generated from the hand-drawn traits by artist Sartoshi. These traits range from beard, background, 4:20 watch, chain, eyes, hat over headphones, headphones, hat under headphones, and more. This collection also includes 21 1 of 1 NFTs hand-drawn by the artist.

It is a project already in the public domain – allowing holders to use it in any way they wish.

Mfers had had a long and quirky history even before they became NFT. Because of the iconic “meme” effect it generated on social media, Mfers quickly gained the attention of the NFT crowd — and soon went on to create high value on Opensea charts.

CryptoPunks originally inspired Mfers’ Sartoshi, the original creator of this project, to start tweeting jokes about it on social media. The overly-simplistic artwork grabbed the attention of NFT enthusiasts quickly.

However, it wasn’t until March of 2022 that this project was able to push beyond 4ETH when it came to its floor price. The price quickly corrected, but now by much. In fact, due to the open nature of this project, 2022.s bear market didn’t have much of an effect on it. It led the tokens to remain stable above 0.5ETH and trade sideways around 0.8ETH.

Many hail Mfers as one of the coolest NFT projects in the market. The simplistic approach to the artworks and the fact that each trait is hand-drawn is well received by NFT experts all over YouTube.

Who are the Founders of Mfers?

Mfers NFT is founded by one artist – Sartoshi.

The backstory of this NFT is as quirky as the creator himself. In March of 2021, Sartoshi started looking for digital arts on Superrare. It was there that he chose his artist name – Sartoshi.

The process started to unfold rapidly, or as Sartoshi puts it, “It all hit hyperspace.” He came across punks and was fascinated that Larva Labs created it without any blueprint. That inspired him to buy his first Cryptopunks. Afterward, he bought a few more.

“I believed that they were an undervalued albeit speculative asset.” – Sartoshi states in Mfer’s backstory. That led to him buying and selling CryptoPunks NFTs all summer, which he had much fun doing.

Then, it happened, he drew a kid with a cigarette in his mouth and headphones over his head, slouching backward on his chair while looking at the computer. Sartoshi quickly made this artwork as his PFP. The picture gave him the feeling of a “smoking mother f**** that didn’t care about anything around him.” The artwork soon transcended and became one of the first meme-NFTs in the market.

“The world is new and full of artists, collectors, investors, gamers, teachers, and whatever.”, Sartoshi continues, “So what if an NFT collection could capture that feeling so anyone could be their mfer inside?”

This backstory was quirky and likely laid the foundation of the ideology behind this NFT project.

What is the Original Vision Behind Mfers NFT?

Mfers NFT is a minimalistic NFT project. It doesn’t have any visions of world domination or charity. It just moved ahead to create a community of creators that can be themselves around each other – nothing more.

Also, the official website of Mfer NFT doesn’t have anything. It doesn’t have a roadmap or anything else that can point us toward the future of this project. All it does have is a simple module to buy the NFTs that specify that the collection has already been sold out.

But that does it say about this project’s uniqueness.

However, the most legitimate account among them has started an official discord as a community for the meme-crafters who use Satoshi’s original work. Furthermore, there are over 5.7k Mfers NFT holders, according to Opensea.

The first mint ended long ago, and now Mfers NFTs are only available on Opensea. Interested parties can go there to buy it.

How did you discover mfers?

Okay so is mfers the vibiest PFP project in the space?

This question is very hard to answer without bias. I feel everyone in the space thinks their NFT is the vibeiest. What I can say is that mfers are very relatable. Their design and color stand out among most NFTs, but even that’s debatable (doodles, etc). I think what works so well with them is since their birth the culture and art melted together almost instantly. If you have an mfer, you’re an mfer.

What can you say about Sartoshi leaving the space?

I think it’s best I leave it without comment. I’m here to build with my fellow mfers and sketchymfers 🙂

What are mfers?

Mfers is a 10,000 item Ethereum NFT collection that minted on November 30, 2021 at 4:20 p.m. — to stay consistent with meme culture. Each mint cost 0.069 Ethereum each, and it minted out in about 10 minutes in a gas war, with no promos or allowlist. In addition to the 10,000, there were 21 1-of-1 NFTs.

In Sartoshi’s post “what are mfers?” he says: “The world of mfers I envisioned would epitomize the simple idea that ‘we all mfers.’ There is no king, ruler, or defined roadmap–and mfers can build whatever they can think of with these mfers.”

How did you find out about mfers?

Okay let’s get straight to the point. Do you agree that mfers are the vibiest PFP project in the space at this point?

100% mfer! The artwork is very archetypical. But it is perfected. I like the simplicity and the incredible optimism that the mfers exude. I am never bored, I find life much too short to be able to do everything interesting! I’ve always compared Crypto to a big ocean with lots of creatures floating around. Most tourists are swallowed up by the waves, many are eaten by the larger fish. The mfers surf the waves, and don’t get lost even after diving into the deep sea. mfers keep on vibing and building, no matter what.

That’s deep. And what is the mfer community initiative you like the most?

Thoughts on Sartoshi’s departure?

Regarding the controversy about royalties, Open Edition revenues and secondary market treasury: There would have been many other ways to handle this in a more community first way. However, Crypto has not yet produced a Mother Theresa; every mfer has different values in life, and Sartoshi is just a mfer.

So what’s up with this unique curly mfer? How did you get it?

Would you believe this mfer really minted this “curly mfer” and sent her to me?! I was in awe.. not only to have a curly haired mfer but with a purple background too; traits that aren’t found anywhere in the 10k collection. Sartoshi noted that she was a “pretty cool mfer”, and we stuck with it. I may be biased when it comes to what my favorite traits are but if I had the ability to grab more based on specific traits, I’m going for hoodie mfers all day.

At this point, do mfers vibe harder than anyone in the space?

I would have to say yes. Mfers’ vibe has been different from day one compared to other communities (in my experience). I feel sartoshi did a great job at creating a laid back, easy on the eye but heavy in the spirit PFP that was just so easy for people to identify with. With no empty promises or false hope, it was easy to have no expectations and pave our own way.

I genuinely feel like to be a mfer you have to have a certain “I don’t give a fuck”, “don’t fuck with me” vibe mixed with a “I care for you and I’m here for you, motherfucker vibe”. I think we generally handle adversity very well and one of mfers strongest defense to anything (ie; markets down, toxicity in the space) is to meme our way through it. Mfers make it easy to vibe with some of the funniest, smartest and most caring people in web3.

What are some of the community initiatives that stand out to you the most?

To be honest all of the mfers community initiatives have been special to me because I know that nothing was or will ever be decided by one person. Every decision is voted on by the community, for the community.

What is your view on Sartoshi’s move?

Whew, I never thought someone who I never met (and didn’t even know the real identity of) could make me so emotional!

I had subconsciously prepared for his departure because it did make sense to “complete the meme” and replicate a Satoshi styled exit. But I definitely did not expect for that to be the news on 6/9 and it was a pretty hard pill to swallow.  It felt like he metaphorically pushed us off the cliff to see if we could fly and of course, we can—mfers is just getting started.

The Mfers Next Era

Those seven are known as: imp0ster, zhoug, masterchan, metabananas, lexito, mleejr, and kml. Four signatures will be required for transactions from the multi-sig.

The royalties have also been changed to give 50 percent to this community wallet. Sartoshi will remain 25 percent of royalties, and the other 25 percent will continue to flow to the rest of the mfers team.
