At Gary Vaynerchuk’s multi-day non-fungible token (NFT) conference “VeeCon” in Minneapolis, there was no visible sign of the market collapse that preceded the crypto-palooza.

‘Happy’ singer Pharrell Williams had just left the main stage after bestowing the virtues of Web 3.0 and telling the enthusiastic NFT collector crowd “you are changing the paradigm right now.” Nearby, a line of mostly men in their late 20s and early 30s waited patiently to buy whatever merch they could afford.

And yet, in the prior six weeks, more than $1 trillion in crypto assets had been wiped away while the value of NFTs fell more than 80% from their market peak.

For the serial entrepreneur and host of the festivities, the steep losses in the cryptocurrency industry merely vindicated his view: Vaynerchuk, or Gary Vee, as he’s known, had predicted this crash or “NFT Winter” on multiple occasions.

Vaynerchuk, who founded VaynerMedia, VaynerSports, and a signature NFT collection called VeeFriends, claimed to be ahead of the curve on crypto as one of the original NFT evangelists. In his view, the recent correction is a healthy check to the excess speculation.

“They’re down from completely unsustainable gold rush numbers of January,» he stated. «They’re also so up from a year ago, and it’s not even close. And so this is what always happens. I was there when everybody wrote articles and said the internet was a fad.”

As for the transformative potential of NFTs, Vaynerchuk cited the concept of tickets to live events.

“Why should a ticket be a QR Code?» he said. «A ticket being an NFT that’s worth something after the game is much more realistic.»

Gary Vee made over $90 million in 90 days from selling his child-like hand-drawn cartoons as NFTs. Nine months ago he had never heard of an NFT.

Gary Vaynerchuk, aka Gary Vee, is an entrepreneur, tech investor and social media (i.e., self-promoting) «thinkfluencer». He started in May when he launched an NFT (non-fungible token) series on OpenSea (the NFT marketplace). From there, Vee used his social media status and network of influencers to promote the series of cartoons called «VeeFriends» that sold like hotcakes.

On October 1st, he sold 5 drawings at Christie’s for over $1.25m.

This all sounds nonsense, right? An over-hyped fad that is making fools of the suckers getting drawn in at the bottom.

Well not really, if you look at it this way.

NFTs are virtual status symbols for the community of people willing to pay upwards of $50k for each one. Not only do they get the exclusive ownership rights to the Vee artwork, but each NFT also comes with free entry to every Gary Vee event and bragging rights to being inside the VeeFriends Club.

The point is that ownership of virtual objects equals status. In the same way that a billion people on the planet pay over the odds for a mobile phone from Apple because it signals «wealth».

But in the new world, artists can create music on TikTok (and go viral overnight), then release it through SoundCloud, and then sell it as an NFT.

To be clear, I struggle to see the value in a hand-drawn Ape with very little going for it in the way of artistic merit. But that’s not the point (and nor should it be for you if you’re looking at this through a cynical lens.)

Because this is a trend that has developed substantial momentum in less than a year. It plays to the very basic animal behaviour of signalling status (a way of attracting potential mates and warding off competition). Owning a virtual object through an NFT gets you into an exclusive club that carries with it additional benefits hardcoded into the smart contract it is written in.

This weekend, thousands of NFT-holders are descending upon the Twin Cities for Gary Vaynerchuk’s «VeeCon» — a four-day conference bringing together business leaders, entrepreneurs and Web3 evangelists to discuss digital transformation in everything from art to assets.

Vaynerchuk’s «VeeFriends» NFT collection is comprised of 10,255 character nonfungible tokens available for purchase via the cryptocurrency ethereum. Each token includes a «smart contract» with metadata that Vaynerchuk can use to interact with its buyer. Token holders also are given exclusive access to the annual event for three years after the NFT’s purchase.

Not only is this the inaugural VeeCon, it’s also the first-ever NFT-ticketed event. Token holders access their ticket via a digital wallet on their phones that verifies their ownership of Vaynerchuk’s digital assets.

The price of ethereum has recently traded down by as much as 60% from its 2021 peak.

The event, hosted at U.S. Bank Stadium, features keynote speakers that have recently come onto the Web3 scene, including Snoop Dogg, Spike Lee, Deepak Chopra, Eva Longoria and Mila Kunis, among others.

VeeCon has also been a boon for the local economy in Minneapolis, which is one of many communities around the country attempting to recover lost tourism dollars from the Covid-19 pandemic. «As a local Minnesotan, I’m really proud that the first-ever VeeCon is taking place in my backyard,» said Maha Abouelenein, a local organizer of the event and CEO of media organization Digital & Savvy. «I can’t wait to see all the friendships that are created at VeeCon.»

«Right now the overwhelming energy of the space is very short term. I would call it greed. Many are not spending their time on education,» Vaynerchuk said.

«The reality is that all that behavior is going to lead to 97-98% of these current projects losing value over the next 24-36 months because the supply and demand curves will not work out.»

What’s the purpose and utility of VeeFriends NFTs?

As of October 2022, VeeFriends collection has generated nearly 79,000 ETH (over $240 million) in sales volume via OpenSea. Yet, since launching the first 10,255 VeeFriends, GaryVee had remained adamant that VeeFriends Series 1 was only the beginning.

In August 2021, the VeeFriends community got the first glimpse at what he meant with the announcement of Book Games. Then, only two months later, the VeeFriends roster expanded yet again with Mini Drops. And in October of 2022, VeeFriends’ debuted physical products of the plush characters, including Willful Wizard, Adventurous Astronaut, Practical Peacock, Genuine Giraffe, Empathy Elephant, Heart Trooper, Gratitude Gorilla, Common Sense Cow, and Be the Bigger Person.

VeeFriends’ partnership with Macy’s will reveal each character’s backstory

In a notable deployment of use cases, every VeeFriends physical product comes with a printed QR code connected to 3D animated films and character songs. The physical collection of VeeFriends will go for $9.99 to $29.99 in plush and/or vinyl character sets. You can buy the VeeFriends products on Macy’s Toys” R” Us website, Macy’s mobile app, and at all physical stores of the chain nationwide.

“VeeFriends collectible plush and vinyl sets have unique stories and design, and we can’t wait for both parents and children to enjoy,” added Moore in the release. VeeFriends’ goal is to add value to the NFT community. “It’s just one more way we want to connect with our NFT holders and show them how we are developing the IP behind the characters,” said VeeFriends President Andy Krainak in the release.

From October 4 to October 18, VeeFriends is giving token holders of specific characters a free, claimable figure. “VeeFriends wants to bring value to our NFT community — not only will they get first access to claim the collection, but they also get priority to the in-store events,” said Krainak. This means NFT holders will have incentives in the form of higher priority service during events in physical stores.

Book Games

Book Games stemmed from the announcement of GaryVee’s book, “Twelve and a Half: Leveraging the Emotional Ingredients Necessary for Business Success.” Even before the announcement, Vaynerchuk had mapped out the book’s utility on an NFT scale. With Book Games, he could tie his book to the VeeFriends ecosystem, all while solidifying it as an integral part of the collection.

Book Games is a layer 2 NFT project featuring 125,000 burnable tokens in a game that’s played, as GaryVee says, “forever.” The game worked by incentivizing Vaynerchuk’s NFT fan base to purchase as many copies of his new book as possible to receive NFT rewards.

First, a bit about “layer 2.”

But how do you play the game?

On August 27, 2021, the VeeFriends patriarch announced that for every 12 books someone ordered during the Book Games one-day promotion period, they would receive one NFT via airdrop. After a nearly 100-day waiting period, GV had sold over one million copies, announcing the gamified part of Book Games to go live on January 10, 2022.

The “game” part of Book Games comes from the numerous trading possibilities enabled through Immutable X. Book Games holders can sell their NFTs or keep them to trade for other NFTs, sports cards, VeeCon tickets, and other special prizes. Book Games can also act as whitelist access for other VeeFirends projects, which we’ll cover later in the Series 2 section.

VeeFriends Mini Drops

Two months after Book Games, GaryVee announced the launch of VeeFriends Mini Drops — a limited sub-collection of VeeFriends that focuses on collaboration, scarcity, and what GaryVee calls the “cultural longevity” of the VeeFriends characters.

This Mini Drops began with the launch of Spooky Vees, a collection of 31 unique 1/1 pieces featuring Halloween-themed VeeFriends characters that were dropped, of course, on Halloween. These NFTs were eligible to claim on a first-come, first-served basis by those who held a Halloween VeeFriend.

Also encompassed within the Mini Drops collection are Gift Goat NFTs. By holding the Gift Goat VeeFriends character, collectors can expect to receive 18 total exclusive gifting experiences curated by GaryVee and the VeeFriends team. Each gifting experience consists of one physical gift and one NFT out of a supply of 555 to match the 555 total supply of Gift Goat tokens.

To date, Gift Goat holders have received NFTs in collaboration with Danny Cole (Creature World), Isaac “Drift” Wright (Where My Vans Go), Pop Wonder, and more.

Vee Friends Characters

There seem to be 10,255 Vee Friends tokens in three main categories: Access, Gift, as well as Admission. Gary had also drawn as well as created 268 unique Vee Friends characters, as you’ll see.

The most common access token is the “Group Access,” with 165 tokens available. These tokens offer both in-person and virtual sessions with GaryVee.

The next is “One-to-One” access tokens that give buyers the opportunity to spend time with Vaynerchuk, with 108 tokens available. These range from Facetime conversations to having a workout session with him.

Then there are the 22 “Competition Access” tokens. These involve competitive time with GaryVee, including bowling, checkers, tennis, and video games.

Everything to know about VeeFriends Series 2

After months of teasing a new expansion to the VeeFriends universe, in early April 2022, Vaynerchuk revealed that the project ecosystem is set to grow by 55,555 additional NFTs.

With VeeFriends Series 2, each token will be priced at $995 USD in ETH and act as a way for the average NFT enthusiast to join the VeeFriends ecosystem at a lower cost. Things will go a bit differently this time, though, as the total supply of the new series will be released on numerous dates throughout April.

First, on April 12, Book Games NFT holders that were randomly selected to be on the Friends List (whitelist) will be able to mint Series 2 NFTs. The total supply set aside for Book Games holders is 32,000 NFTs.

Also, on April 12, those holding a VeeFriends Series 1 NFT can claim Series 2 NFTs. The total supply for this allotment is similar to the total Series 1 supply of 10,255.

Then, on April 25, the public sale will commence, with only 10,000 Series 2 NFTs available for purchase. This number may change as any unminted NFTs from the Friends List minting period will be placed up for sale on this date.

Finally, starting on April 27, 15 new characters (220 tokens per character) will be introduced into the VeeFriends ecosystem. One character will be made available per day over 15 days, with the only way to receive one being to hold a specific set of Book Games tokens to enter a daily raffle.

It’s important to note that Series 2 NFTs will not give their owners VeeCon access but will grant holders other incentives within the VaynerNFT ecosystem. The forthcoming drop will also present a variety of new token burn mechanics unique to Book Games and Series 2.

Vanderchuk also acknowledged that the celebrity endorsements that put crypto, NFTs, and Web 3 in the global spotlight, particularly those that aired during the most recent Super Bowl in Los Angeles, have been seen in a new light recently.
