Is the history of the dot com crash being repeated in the NFT world?
We all know about the dot com crash and how it crashed the market and brought in recession. Similar patterns can be detected in the NFT marketplace at the current date. Unpredictable rise of the internet companies and increased market cap during the late 90s, the burst of the bubble, and recession, the pattern seems to be returning.
NFT marketplace has also hyped exponentially in recent years. There have been 5.2 million NFT sales totaling $162 million over the previous four and a half years by the start of 2021. After more than a year, the sum has risen to 41 million NFTs worth $25.8 billion.
Digital pictures selling for millions of dollars and continuously rising in value are making people rich. The role of NFT here is not just to make people rich but there are certain utilities tied to it. NFTs which have utilities tied to the real world are worth the value but what about the rest that is just exponentially rising in value without any utilities tied to the real world.
Currently, there are millions of NFTs being created and sold, mutant shinobi bunnies, meta pizza, wolf boss, dragon verse, and many more. Literally, there are millions of NFTs being minted and traded for profits. Many of them don’t even have a real-life utility and are being traded just for the fun of earning. Many of them who have real-world utility don’t have valuable utility.
The values of NFT are driving up exponentially all because of the hype created in the market similar to the hype created by the dot com companies in the 90s. Similar to the dot com crash may be the NFT market is also going to crash bringing in losses for many investors and collectors. For creators, however, there is little downside to it as they create and they sell and also get a royalty. From all the hype going on, I think the NFT bubble will blast soon and I think it has already started as a downfall in the market can be seen already.
Although a bubble, we cannot ignore the rest of the history regarding the dot com crash and how that crash brought in a revolution. Various companies like Amazon, eBay, Microsoft, Google, and Apple survived the dot com crash, and look at them now these are the companies that brought in revolution and have changed a lot in the technology sector. Similarly, after the burst of the NFT bubble, there will be certain projects remaining that will change the face of the internet and take it towards web 3.0.
I think the majority of NFT projects will go to zero and some that survive will change the face of the internet bringing in a lot of technological advancement. NFTs that have real-life valuable utilities will become the gateway to the metaverse.
NFTs are the platform for the shift we are making towards the digital world. Not every project will make it only some will survive the burst of the bubble and I think those projects will be responsible for shifting us towards the digital world. Believe it or not, concepts of NFTs like smart contracts, and digital utilities, are going to change a lot in the technology sector.
As said history repeats itself, I believe the same will happen in the NFT world, the bubble will burst collapsing the majority of NFT projects and some that remain will be the change driving us into the world of web 3.0.

NFT collections like Cool Cats and Bored Apes Yacht Club have essentially become media franchises. The digital artworks are showing up as members of music groups, characters in comic books and stars of movies and TV series.
So it was only a matter of time before someone came up with a tried-and-true idea in franchise making: bring these disparate characters together in one show, much like an Avengers-style movie. That was the beginning of a brainstorm that led animation startup Invisible Universe to create its new series, “The R3al Metaverse,” which launched Tuesday. (Disclosure: dot.LA co-founder and executive chairman Spencer Rascoff is an investor in Invisible Universe)
The short-form comedy, released as one- to two-minute episodes on social media, pokes fun at reality TV tropes and the debate over NFTs. In one episode, the characters stare at a painting and are confused by its lack of “real-world application” besides being a wall decoration.
Unlike traditional media franchises, NFT collections aren’t completely controlled by a single company. Each project has thousands of individual NFT holders who often have their own commercialization rights over their artworks. Invisible Universe bought three NFTs and secured licenses for two more to get characters that fit well with “The R3al Metaverse” story, Biggio previously told dot.LA.
A crop of NFT media projects have similarly given individual holders creative input, from a community-driven novel project called Jenkins the Valet to an upcoming horror flick by filmmaker Kevin Smith. As it happens, the production company behind a reality TV show that Invisible Universe is parodying—“The Real World”—has its own plans to create NFT-backed programming.
It’s too early to know if such projects will appeal to a wide audience beyond early NFT adopters. Another looming question is whether giving fans input will help or harm the creative quality of such works. Biggio acknowledged that balancing act, saying her company has set “creative guardrails” such as the traits and motivations of main characters.
“But within those bounds, there’s tons of room for collaboration,” Biggio added. For example, NFT holders will help write characters’ “confessional interviews,” a common reality TV device in which cast members speak directly to the camera.
“There’s an opportunity to poke fun at reality TV, as well as to poke fun at the kind of absurdity of the metaverse,” she said. “People struggle to define the metaverse or define Web3, and we think that there’s a lot of comedy in that.”

The dotdotdots community quickly rallied around this puzzle, formed a Discord, and a mad scramble to solve the first challenge was underway. Within hours the first puzzle was cracked open, but then the mystery deepened, as they were left with another loose end.
In the ensuing weeks the community grappled with the very meaning of this elaborately constructed mystery. Who was behind it? Does the emphasis on Orwell suggest a more sinister and political agenda? Are we being recruited? (this is the point where my involvement started) What are their goals and do they align with the community?
It was at this point that the ‘mirror’ appear. A ghost in the machine, that despite our best efforts, eluded capture within our Discord. We knew that they could hear us and monitor our chatter, but nothing more. The Mirror claimed to be an associate of the ‘dot’, but was not aware of his/her identity. The Mirror also claimed to have appeared to give us clarity and focus. Although we’ve grown accustomed to their presence (sometimes they appear as ‘00’ or a variety of other names), they often add further detail to the intricately woven web spun by their cryptic replies.

The only certainty we have is that once $ETH hits and exceeds its previous ATH of 4360, the dot printer will awaken from its slumber and usher forth more embedded clues within the remaining NFT dotdotdots minions. Only 10k will ever exist. The enigmatic and anonymous personality of ‘dot’ will also reveal himself/herself once more, as promised. Nobody knows what to expect which only deepens the allure.

A: A lot of people who are buying the NFTs right now are because of the hype and most of them are generative artworks (they create a base image with some elements and use a computer to randomly generate the artwork). Unlike those artworks, the artists in the Draw A Dot community create each illustration from scratch. In the long run, these works will have more value because they cannot be randomly generated by a computer and others can hardly copy their styles.
