Cyberkongz is one of the most well-known NFT projects on Ethereum. It has been around since its mint in March 2021, marking it one of the earliest PFP NFT projects to release. In a year since, CyberKongz have continuously executed some of the most innovative ways to engage their community.

From the $BANANA token, to introducing breeding, to launching a “Play and Kollect” game on Polygon this year, Cyberkongz has evolved from their original Genesis Cyberkongz into an entire ecosystem.

This is the first part of a series of breaking down the Cyberkongz NFT contract

Cyberkongz is a generative NFT that has a collection of 1000 unique and randomly generated 2D pixelated gorillas (known as kongz) tradable on open sea market place. These first 1000 set of minted kongz are know as genesis kongz which comes with the ability to breed with each other to extend a newly generated set of kongz known as baby kongz.

These 34×34 pixelated kongz are not just freaking awesome to be used as profile pics in any social platform, but also has a huge community and a lot of utility around them!

Breeding of two genesis kongz gives birth to a baby kong as well as a 3D voxel kong which can be used as a social avatar in the metaverse.

The about page on the cyberkongz website gives a well detailed explanation of the tokens entire ecosystem and tokenomics.

I just love how they manage to exquisitely blend their NFT’s with both DeFi and metaverse.

CyberKongz Play and Kollect

The project recently released its “Play and Kollect” game on Polygon called Jungle Adventure. The game acts as a bridge to the existing tokens in the Kongz ecosystem to new applications and expansions of the universe, bringing new utility to Kongz NFTs.

According to the game documents, “The main objective of adventures is to send CyberKongz VX in crews of one to five on jungle adventure runs to gather Kongium and redeem it for prizes like the seasonal $BANANA prize pool, exclusive NFTs, and much more as we explore the jungle.”

The main goal of the game is to gather Kongium, which can be utilized to claim a part of the $BANANA prize pool, to level up CyberKongz VXs, or to exchange it directly for NFTs.

Baby CyberKongz and Shardz

Although baby CyberKongz do not yield $BANANA, they are still a crucial part of the Kongz ecosystem. Every baby yields 10 Shardz per day. With 100 Shardz, you can claim a Charmz.

Shardz can only be yielded by Baby Kongz, which gives them exclusive access to Charmz over time. Charmz have a variety of use cases in the game to improve performance of the CyberKongz VX, and they can also be traded on the secondary market for Ethereum.

According to the team, Charmz “will play a key role in the future development of CyberKongz VX equipment system.”

CyberKongz in the Metaverse

Besides CyberKongz VX, the community also owns several plots of land within The Sandbox Game. It owns a 12×12 estate called Neo Kong City, and also owns a massive 24×24 plot to build Kongz Island.

There was also a Sandbox Game auction for a large monument called “The Shrine of Truth” which CyberKongz won — they will rename it to “The Shrine of Kongz.”

Breeding kongz

This function is responsible for creating and incubating baby kongz provided that the owner has two genesis kongz to serve as a sire and a matron.

What are CyberKongz?

Cyberkongz are randomly generated unique 2D-3D avatars with a social aspect weaved into them. Capable of being used as Profile pics, these NFTs are now eyeing the metaverse. Let us now dive into the various traits of Cyberkongz and devise their exact value within the NFT space.

CyberKongz NFT Explained

Cyberkongz are a collection of Ethereum based digital collectibles that can act as avatars or profile pictures aimed to enhance your social experience. Started as a collection of 1000 NFTs, these highly customizable “kongz” have garnered a lot of NFT enthusiasts.

Launched by artists Myoo with little to no advertising campaign, Cyberkongz still generated enough steam that the heads in the NFT space started to turn. From NFT novices to veterans couldn’t help but get enchanted by the offerings of this Non Fungible Token.

So, what makes this project different from the rest? Is it the unique attributes of each kongz or, is it the social utility it has in social media?

In reality, the answer is a mix of both. Highly customized, randomized, and unique in all aspects, the Cyberkongz have invaded the space in the NFT-verse with their utility to act as profile pictures.

However, that was just the start of the journey.

They started as two-dimensional avatars. But due to the constant innovative efforts of the community NFT artists and developers, it is moving to the 3D space.

Upon observing that, we can safely say that the next logical step of this NFT is the same as all others, to enter into the metaverse.

Who is the founder of Cyberkongz?

Cyberkongz comes from the mind of the artist – or should we say a mad scientist – Myoo. He is one of the few pioneers of the creative NFT space whose contribution to this domain has been instrumental in pushing Crypto and NFT into the mainstream.

“Cryptopunks was what inspired me. They were the forefathers of what we call artistic NFTs.” – Myoo said in an interview given to Yahoo magazine.

Launched in March of 2021, Cyberkongz quickly started to gain notoriety with its 989 Genesis and ten Legendary Cyberkongz. And it was before people realized that, unlike most tokens whose utilities take to unravel, Cyberkongz could act as profile pictures right from the start.

Asserting how he leveraged the creative vacuum that existed during the time of launch, Myoo states, “There wasn’t a lot out at that point. That was one of the primary reasons why we had such a big uptake that we were able to form a close-knit community of developers – all coming together at a time when no one was shouting for the need of more NFTs with utility.”

Those ideas gave rise to the $BANANA tokens, currency within the Cyberkongz space that the genesis kongz generate daily. Burning a certain number of bananas allows NFT owners to breed and incubate baby kongz, one of 4000 uniquely generated Cyberkongz who vary in traits as well as rarities.

What this community of highly talented developers first ideated – creating an NFT in a 2D state, is now morphing into the need to penetrate 3D space.

Myoo has thus released a third variant of Cyberkongz, the Cyberkongz VX in a bid to venture into the metaverse.

CyberKongz Types and their utilities

Currently, the family of CyberKongz have three types:

Genesis CyberKongz

Owners can either sell those $BANANA tokens at a hefty profit or use them to customize the names and the backstories of their genesis Cyberkongz.

Using a form of the cybernetic breeding process, NFT creator Myoo gave life to another NFT and thus, evolving the Cyberkongz universe. Known as Baby Kongz, these “cute as a button” little NFTs require a lot of energy. The “breeding” process requires fuel that costs 600 $BANANA.

Owners can rename or create biographies of these kongz by spending bananas. Additionally, owning this one-of-a-kind NFT unlocks an exclusive Cyberkongz discord server.

Cyberkongz VX

Yearning to go far beyond the 2D NFT space, and push Cyberkongz into the metaverse, the team created Cyberkongz VX. Owners can utilize it in the Metaverse environments like The Sandbox, with more to come in the future.

In addition to being usable in The Sandbox and other metaverses, utilities of CyberKongz VX include renaming and unlocking an exclusive discord surfer. Also, owners can download the 3d kongz model to create their artworks or merchandise.

There are over 5000 items listed with varying traits on the secondary market. These include Genesis, Baby, Legendary and Birthday.

All these factors add another level of uniqueness to this NFT.

What makes CyberKongz unique?

The uniqueness of Cyberkongz comes from the perpetual innovative state the developers find themselves in. Myoo, it seems, is never satisfied staying stagnated at one place, and thus, is moving ahead with their high-quality team to venture into the metaverse.

“Another unique factor about us is that we don’t merely give you a roadmap; we act upon it, and only reveal our accomplishments once we have achieved them.” – Myoo added in an interview given to Yahoo Finance.

That zeal has pushed forward this NFT. Recently, the developers have purchased three plots of land on The Sandbox. They intend to create a futuristic cityscape within the metaverse where the community can use their avatars to engage socially.

What is the future of Cyberkongz?

This NFT project wants to go beyond social interactions, and its partnership with The Sandbox is the first step. The developer community is also in talks with other companies, and thus, there is a possibility that we will see these Kongz in other metaverses.

Although currently, the developers aim to expand the NFTs mainly in The Sandbox.

“We are trying to push the boundaries of what we can do in the Sandbox.” – Myoo states.

They aim to create larger avatars and popular larger spaces within the metaverse to add further value to the utility of these NFTs.

They seek to introduce gaming aspects that create value, Cyberkongz developers of more interactivity, minigames and meaningful engagement within the community members.

They intend to introduce more gamified areas that act as social hubs and provide minigames to the NFT holders. It will engage them in a meaningful way while keeping them entertained.

As these would require more areas, The developers are now partnering with companies to create their landscapes.

Changing names and bio of kongz

Cyberkongz is really the first NFT project that I have personally witnessed that allows owners to change the name and bio of NFT’s by giving them their very own unique story. However, these ability also come at a cost of few BANANA’s as we’ll see soon enough.

The actual implementation of the changeName and changeBio contract is in another contract called ERC721Namable which was inherited by the kongz contract.

Evolving kongz

After a baby kong has been incubated, the last thing left for its full transition is to evolve. This function handles how a baby kong evolves by passing its ID as a parameter to the tryEvolve method inside the breedManager (which is kept secret from the world) which returns back a new gene for the kong.

// breedmanger tries to evolve the kong at the given tokenId.

Assumptions: Since there is no way for me to see exactly what goes on inside the breedManager.tryEvolve method, my assumption is that; the method uses the tokenId to create a new gene to be reassigned to the evolving kong.

Things I’m still unsure of: I am still yet to fully understand what happens after the gene of a kong gets changed after evolving it. Does it get some special utility or something? Please let me know if you have a better understanding of this function.

CyberKongz NFT Origin Story

The original artist for CyberKongz is Myoo, who created 1,000 Genesis CyberKongz back in March 2021. The 34×34 pixel CyberKongz were priced at 0.01 Ethereum each, on sale at a time where there were not many other profile picture NFT projects out there.

From that start, they quickly built a strong community and ecosystem around their game.

The largest Genesis CyberKongz sale of all time took place in October 2021 for 208 Ethereum, about $746,000 USD at the time, for CyberKongz #445. The current floor for the project is 75 Ethereum, by far the most expensive member of the CyberKongz family.

CyberKongz on MomentRanks

For those who had two Genesis CyberKongz (and 600 $BANANA), they were soon able to mint one of the 4,000 Baby Kongz. These were randomly generated and act as a secondary collection to Genesis CyberKongz. Baby Kongz and original CyberKongz reside in the same collection on OpenSea, and the floor is currently 5 Ethereum for a Baby.

Before Baby Kongz are born and revealed, they are incubator NFTs first — there are some of these still available at a floor price of 9.9 Ethereum, and only 268 still exist.

A few months after Baby Kongz were announced, the team released CyberKongz VX. These are a 15,000 3D full-body voxel CyberKongz to be used within CyberKongz’ various metaverse platforms. These were a public mint, but were also free for Genesis or Baby CyberKongz holders. The current floor for VX are 1.25 Ethereum.

$BANANA Token

The creation and utility of the $BANANA token is one of the key reasons why Genesis CyberKongz have been and remained so popular. One can earn $BANANA by holding a Genesis CyberKongz, which yields 10 $BANANA per day for ten years. 3,650,000 $BANANA will be generated per year over the next ten years.

Utility for $BANANA

Collectors can use $BANANA to participate in the community DAO, change your Kongz’ name and origin story, and soon to purchase wearables for your CyberKongz VX. You can even use $BANANA to list and place offers on CyberKongz on OpenSea.

$BANANA was also used for breeding Baby Kongz at a cost of 600 $BANANA plus holding two Genesis CyberKongz, but all the babies have been bred at this point. By burning a certain amount of $BANANA, owners can also give their CyberKongz unique characteristics, like a name and biography. This is just one way that $BANANA is being used in the CyberKongz ecosystem.

CyberKongz $BANANA token use

At its current value of about $10, earning 10 $BANANA a day would yield you the equivalent of $100 USD per day. If this value remains the same, a genesis CyberKongz would yield approximately $36,500 USD a year.

At its all-time high in October 2021, $BANANA was worth $105, yielding $1,050 per day just for holding a Genesis CyberKongz.

Kongz contract

It’s important to mention, every function broken down in here belongs to the kongz contract. Any mention of a function that is not inside the contract will be pointed out.

Every kong goes through 2 main phases of growth

Incubation: There are two main prominent places where a kong gets incubated in the contract. The first is during the initial minting of genesis kongz in the constructor, while the second is after breeding a new kong.

Evolve: This is the part where a kong evolves; what this means here is that the kong gets assigned a new gene which has some other meaning.

The kongz contract chiefly contains 5 key functionalities

Ascending kongz

Seeing as the first generation of kongz were created and stored directly on Opensea, the team behind cyberkongz decided to migrate all of their tokens from Opensea to their own smart-contracts. The migration of tokens created and stored directly on Opensea to a smart-contract is what is known as — ascending

REF1 — isValidKong: isValidKong is a utility function used to check whether or not the the tokenID of a kong conforms to Opeansea ID format. Seeing as the explanation of this format is beyond the scope of this breakdown, I will instead leave a medium post right here that explains it properly.

At the start of the contract, the contract owner starts by minting 3 genesis tokens for themselves as seen in the snippet below
