How CryptoKitties started

Shortly after the release of CryptoCats, Axion Labs introduced CryptoKitties. Those tokens were unveiled in October 2017 and became the next NFT phenomenon to hit the market.

How CryptoKitties works

CryptoKitties are breedable virtual cats that are bought and sold as NFTs. There are four types available: Normal, Fancy, Special Edition, and Exclusive. Every CryptoKitty has 12 Cattributes, including its pattern, eye shape, environment, and other characteristics. While Cattributes determine the appearance of Normal Kitties, this isn’t always true with other types.

Any two Kitties can be bred, with one acting as the matron and the other as the sire. CryptoKitties are gender-fluid, so they’re all able to fill either role. You can breed two of your own Kitties or breed one of your own with a public sire.

After breeding, you get a new Kitty. The parents need to go through a cooldown period before they can breed again. The cooldown period can take anywhere from one minute to one week, depending on a Kitty’s generation.

CryptoKitties are stored in NFT wallets. Other than breeding your Kitties, you can also put them up for sale on the game’s marketplace or offer them as public sires to be used for breeding.

CryptoCats isn’t formally related to CryptoPunks, but it was inspired by CryptoPunks and received the blessing of Larva Labs through a collaborative design of one black «Punk Kitten.»

The Melbourne-based startup later produced 436 cats for an initial mint price to better manage the growing attention. However, a large amount of that final «December edition» remained unsold until a rediscovery of the project in the CryptoPunks Discord channel in March 2021, upon which over $100,000 worth of volume poured into the collection, leaving only one remaining Cat (#414) stuck in the contract.

In response to the rekindled attention and to secure a stake in royalties from secondary sales, which wasn’t included in the original contract, the CryptoCats team created an official ERC721 Wrapper called the CryptoCat WCCAT token and introduced Wrapped CryptoCats Official on OpenSea, with cat 14 being the first NFT to sell for 8 ETH.

One of the newest types of cats is the so-called shiny cats.  A shiny cat is a variation of a fancy cat that is very, VERY unlikely to be bred. They are so rare, that some shiny cats will never be discovered because they won’t be found within the allotted breeding window for that fancy cat.

There are almost 2 million CryptoKitties that differ from one another with multiple attributes and characteristics. Out of this insane amount of digital cats, there are 50,000 (2.5% of current supply) Gen 0 cats. These are the parents, grandparents, or great grand-parents, of all the other cats in the collection.
