NFTs jumped into the mainstream last year, and some of the most popular collections rose to celebrity status.

Foremost among them is a bored-looking ape avatar, with thousands of unique varieties in terms of appearance.

In 2021, countless celebrities bought an NFT from the Bored Ape Yacht Club, including late-night talk show host Jimmy Fallon, tennis star Serena Williams, and pop star Justin Bieber. Thursday’s release of ApeCoin, a cryptocurrency that was “airdropped” for free to all holders of a Bored Ape NFT, brought renewed—and new—attention to the line of unamused-profile-picture–style NFTs.

The ApeCoin token surged as much as 90% in just its second day of trading, and CoinMarketCap said APE had a $3. 7 billion market cap as of early Friday afternoon.

But what is Bored Ape Yacht Club, and how is it helping NFT collectors get rich?

A set of 101 non-fungible tokens (NFTs) depicting cartoon apes from Bored Ape Yacht Club just sold for $24. 4 million USD at Sotheby’s on Thursday, according to Reuters.

The bundle included 101 iterations of the company’s digitized apes, each fitted in various outfits, accessories and facial expressions for their own unique appearance. Each NFT is listed with their clothing, earring, hat and fur style, as well as their eye and mouth emotions. In addition to the sizable collection, the buyer now has the option to generate six additional “mutant” ape NFTs.

Aside from the monkey NFTs, Sotheby’s auction also included 101 Bored Ape Kennel Club NFTs, which resemble cartoon dogs that the company markets as pets for the aforementioned apes. Those NFTs sold for $1. 8 million USD, raking in a grand total of $26. 2 million USD.

Buyers were able to bid using cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Ether and USDC, along with standard government-issued currency.

Elsewhere, an NFT of a handwritten graphic reading “Test” sold for $270,000 USD.

Non-fungible tokens have been the hottest trend in 2021. They saw global recognition, mainstream adoption, and overall acceptance in and out of the cryptocurrency industry.

The astronomic surge in popularity of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) led to a massive demand (and an even higher supply) of various collections, each one with its intricacies and perks.

Undoubtedly, one of the most popular NFT collections, which even became the most expensive in terms of floor price as of writing this in January 2022, is the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC).

In this editorial, we will take a closer look into the BAYC collection, why it is so popular, what’s the most expensive Ape sold on the market, and which celebrities have been endorsing it so far.

The Bored Ape Yacht Club is a club unlike any other. It’s a virtual lounge reserved only for its members, and there will never be more than 10,000.

Why 10,000? You might ask.

This is how some of the NFTs look like:

Each NFT has its unique traits such as clothing, headwear, expression, and more. Just as other NFTs on Ethereum, these are stored as ERC-721 tokens.

As of writing these lines, they have grown to become the most popular profile picture (PFP) NFT project, and multiple celebrities have already bought and used them for this exact purpose, but more on this later.

LONDON, Sept 9 (Reuters) — A set of 107 non-fungible tokens (NFTs) representing images of cartoon apes sold for $24. 4 million in an online sale at Sotheby’s auction house on Thursday, as the market for the niche crypto asset continues to heat up.

The images were part of the «Bored Ape Yacht Club» collection of NFTs — a set of 10,000 computer-generated cartoon apes, made by the U. -based company Yuga Labs. Owners of the ape NFTs become members of an online club.

Unusually for NFTs, the buyers of Bored Apes also receive the intellectual property rights for the images. They are often used as profile pictures on social media.

The lot contained 101 of these anthropomorphic apes, with different combinations of features such as clothing, accessories and facial expressions, plus the option to generate six new «mutant» ones.

The sale also included a lot of 101 «Bored Ape Kennel Club» NFTs — a set of dogs, marketed as pets for the apes. This fetched $1,835,000 and the set of apes fetched $24,393,000, bringing the total for the sale to $26,228,000.

Sotheby’s allowed payments in the cryptocurrencies bitcoin, ether and USDC, and fiat currency.

There are 10,000 NFTs in the Bored Ape Yacht Club collection. Here are three examples. The middle one is owned by Jimmy Fallon.

Eminem. Jimmy Fallon. Stephen Curry. Snoop Dogg. What do these celebrities have in common? They are all members of the Bored Ape Yacht Club, a prestigious collection of 10,000 NFT monkey avatars, all with different traits and attributes. You can see three Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFTs above: the middle one with the captain’s hat is from Jimmy Fallon.

And what makes BAYC “prestigious”? Well, right now the minimum entry fee is 71 ether. That’s about $ 267,000.

Like everything to do with NFTs, the Bored Ape Yacht Club is controversial. Monkey owners inspire jealousy among those who own and trade NFT art, but confusion and suspicion among people who don’t. Like cryptocurrencies, NFTs are highly volatile. This leads critics to predict the eventual collapse of what they call the bubble.

In brief

Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT prices are surging this week ahead of the expected launch of digital land for Yuga Labs’ upcoming Otherside metaverse game, and now the Ethereum NFTs have reached an all-time record «floor» price.

As of this writing, the cheapest-available Bored Ape NFT is listed for 152 ETH on top marketplace OpenSea, which equates to nearly $429,000. That’s the highest entry-level or floor price seen to date, according to data compiled by NFT Price Floor, and that’s true in terms of both ETH and USD.

According to the site, the floor price for a Bored Ape sat at 123 ETH one week ago, or about $367,000 at the time. The price of ETH is down about 5% over the past week.

Yuga Labs tweeted this week that Bored Ape Yacht Club and Mutant Ape Yacht Club NFT owners will be able to claim an NFT for Otherside within 21 days of the initial mint, which begins Saturday night. These “Otherdeeds,” as Yuga calls them, are expected to represent some kind of plot of land within Otherside, similar to virtual land in The Sandbox or Decentraland.

Some 55,000 NFT Otherdeeds will also be sold to the public to wallet owners who completed know-your-customer checks in recent weeks via a teaser website for Otherside. Each NFT will sell for 305 ApeCoin (APE), which is worth just over $6,800 as of this writing.

The sale will generate 16. 775 million APE, if every NFT sells out, thus generating nearly $378 million in the process, based on the current value of ApeCoin.

The price of ApeCoin is also surging this week ahead of the Otherside NFT drop, with the value jumping 58% over the past week, per data from CoinGecko.

An NFT works like a deed of ownership to a digital item, whether it’s a profile picture, a video file, or a video game item. The wider NFT market surged to $25 billion worth of trading volume in 2021, and the Bored Ape Yacht Club has emerged as one of the biggest projects in the space.

So far, all of the Bored Ape NFT collections have generated about $3. 75 billion worth of collective trading volume to date, according to data from CryptoSlam. Bored Ape Yacht Club owners have repeatedly received substantial benefits since the project launched one year ago at a mint price of 0. 08 ETH, or less than $200 at the time.

Since then, they’ve been airdropped additional NFTs from the Mutant Ape Yacht Club and Bored Ape Kennel Club, received a bounty of free ApeCoin, and will receive an Otherdeed NFT as well. On top of that, the value of Bored Ape NFTs has skyrocketed in the meantime, and owners can use their Ape image IP rights for their own projects and products—like virtual bands and restaurants.

Yuga Labs is now valued at $4 billion after recently raising $450 million from a variety of crypto firms and celebrities, and the startup also acquired the IP rights to the popular CryptoPunks and Meebits collections from their original creator, Larva Labs. Those properties and others from across the NFT space will also feature in Otherside, which is being developed with metaverse investment firm and game publisher Animoca Brands.

The Bored Ape Yacht Club is one of the most prestigious NFT collections in the world. A collection of 10,000 NFTs, each depicting an ape with different traits and visual attributes, Jimmy Fallon, Steph Curry and Post Malone are among their star-studded owners. Right now the price of entry is 52 ether, or $210,000.

Which is why it’s so painful to see that someone accidentally sold their Bored Ape NFT for $3,066.

Bored Ape Yacht Club and its multibillion-dollar ApeCoin, explained

One of these sales is not like the others.

It was bought instantaneously. The buyer paid an extra $34,000 to speed up the transaction, ensuring no one could snap it up before them. The Bored Ape was then promptly listed for $248,000. The transaction appears to have been done by a bot, which can be coded to immediately buy NFTs listed below a certain price on behalf of their owners in order to take advantage of these exact situations.

Sometimes you fuck up, make a bad buy, out of gas fail, send Eth to the wrong wallet or fat finger a listing 👀It’s going to happen. But, letting it occupy your mind for even one second after you can no longer affect the outcome is purely hurting yourself twice ❤️

Fat finger trades happen sporadically in traditional finance — like the Japanese trader who almost bought 57% of Toyota’s stock in 2014 — but most financial institutions will stop those transactions if alerted quickly enough. Since cryptocurrency and NFTs are designed to be decentralized, you essentially have to rely on the goodwill of the buyer to reverse the transaction.

Similar incidents are increasingly being seen in NFTs, now that many collections have accumulated in market value over the past year. Last month someone tried selling a CryptoPunk NFT for $19 million, but accidentally listed it for $19,000 instead. Back in August, someone fat finger listed their Bored Ape for $26,000, an error that someone else immediately capitalized on. The original owner offered $50,000 to the buyer to return the Bored Ape — but instead the opportunistic buyer sold it for the then-market price of $150,000.

«The industry is so new, bad things are going to happen whether it’s your fault or the tech,» Max said. «Once you no longer have control of the outcome, forget and move on

The Bored Ape Yacht Club launched back in April, with 10,000 NFTs being sold for 0. 08 ether each — about $190 at the time. While NFTs are often associated with individual digital art pieces, collections like the Bored Ape Yacht Club, which allow owners to flaunt their NFTs by using them as profile pictures on social media, are becoming increasingly prevalent. The Bored Ape Yacht Club has since become the second biggest NFT collection in the world, second only to CryptoPunks, which launched in 2017 and is considered the «original» NFT collection.

Are there 10,000?

Broadly speaking, there are two types of NFT art. First, you have unique visual art pieces sold as NFTs, just like paintings in real life. think the Beeple NFT which were sold at Christie’s auctions for up to $ 69 million. Second, you have NFT collections, or “blueprints,” like the Bored Ape Yacht Club. Much like Pokemon cards, these take a pattern and produce hundreds or thousands of variants, each classified in terms of rarity. In the case of BAYC, there are 10,000 monkeys, each with different “properties” – different types of fur, facial expressions, clothing, accessories and more.

Bored Ape Yacht Club and its multibillion-dollar ApeCoin, explained

As noted, the “minimum price” for the project – what you’ll pay for a monkey with common traits – is 71 ether. Monkeys with the golden fur trait are rare, so sell for a lot more. Last week someone bought one for 333 ether, or $ 1. 36 million. One with golden fur and laser eyes, two traits below 1%, cost $ 3 million two months ago.

BAYC is the second largest NFT project of its kind, behind only CryptoPunks. CryptoPunks is a collection of 10,000 8-bit avatars created in 2017 and gets much of its value for being the OG NFT collection. For the second half of 2021, CryptoPunks had a low price of around 90 ether. This has declined a bit in the past few weeks and Bored Ape supporters are hoping the BAYC floor price will exceed CryptoPunks, which in the NFT space is referred to as “the flippening”.

What makes Bored Ape Yacht Club valuable?

This is a complicated question. The short answer is that, as with real world art, the value is very much in the eye of the beholder.

Let’s start from the beginning. Bored Ape Yacht Club was launched in late April by a team of four pseudonymous developers, Gargamel, Gordon Goner, Emperor Tomato Ketchup and No Sass. It took 12 hours for all 10,000 to run out at a price of 0. 08 ether, or about $ 190. As you can see in the price chart below (the price on the Y axis is in ether), the price has gone up. steadily from April to July before skyrocketing in August.

Bored Ape Yacht Club and its multibillion-dollar ApeCoin, explained

What makes BAYC or any other NFT collection valuable is highly subjective. Broadly speaking, it’s a mix of three things. Involvement of influencers / celebrities, community strength and member utility.

Second, the utility. Most NFT projects claim to offer a utility of some kind, whether it be accessing games to make money or the option of wagering an NFT in exchange for an associated cryptocurrency. Another high-value collection, CyberKongs, has gained notoriety for allowing two Kong owners to raise a BabyKong NFT.

Bored Ape Yacht Club has done a few things to keep owners’ interest. First, he created the Bored Ape Kennel Club, offering owners the opportunity to “adopt” an NFT dog with traits that mimic those of Bored monkeys. Another giveaway arrived in August: digital vials of mutant serum. Owners can mix their Bored Monkey with the serum to create another NFT: a Mutant Monkey. Both Kennel Club and Mutant Ape NFT sell a lot. In recent weeks the Mutant Ape Yacht Club collection has exploded, with the base price going from around 4 ether in November to 15 ether ($ 55,000) now.

Bored Ape Yacht Club and its multibillion-dollar ApeCoin, explained

A bored monkey and its mutant counterpart.

The last and most important is the community which is built around a collection. Bored Ape Yacht Club has held meetings in New York and California and there have also been Bored Ape meetings in Hong Kong and the UK. Most recently, a weekend of celebrations for owners was held in New York, with a real yacht party and concert featuring appearances from Chris Rock, Aziz Ansari and The Strokes.

Of course, there is a commercial aspect to community development. Art of any kind is only worth what people are willing to pay for it. In an NFT collection, the minimum price is essentially equal to what the least invested members are willing to sell at. People who believe they hold a token in a community results in fewer people putting their monkeys up for sale. Selling your monkey is not just about selling an NFT, but also a community pass.

Why do people buy Bored Apes?

One of the perks of owning a Bored Ape NFT is access to the so-called bathroom which is essentially a virtual hangout place with a canvas that’s accessible only to wallets that contain at least one ape. This is where owners can draw, write expletives, or do whatever they see fit. Every ape-holder is allowed to paint a pixel on the bathroom wall every fifteen minutes. Essentially, buying an ape NFT makes the owner a member of an exclusive club that has a membership cap.

In addition, owning a high-prized NFT and one that’s recognized within a community is much like buying a valuable painting. Its value is derived from the subjective worth of what it means for the owner himself. And remember – each Bored Ape NFT is completely unique, and there will never be a second one like it.

Who Created BAYC?

The Bored Ape Yacht Club was launched by anonymous developers that go by the pseudonyms Gargamel, Gordon Goner, Emperor Tomato Ketchup, and No Sass. There’s also an entity that took responsibility for the creation of BAYC called Yuga Labs.

The story of BAYC is actually quite interesting. On April 23rd, Gordon Goner – one of the project’s creators, announced the pre-sale launch on Discord. The announcement itself was met with almost no reactions.

Bored Ape Yacht Club and its multibillion-dollar ApeCoin, explained

Only about a few hundred apes during the week and, it’s worth noting, that their owners hadn’t yet seen their NFTs and how they looked. On April 30th, the reveal happened, and once people saw the art, the collection spread like wildfire, and all apes were sold a day later at a price of 0. 08ETH each. 30 apes were saved for the team members, giveaways, and promotions.

How do Bored Ape NFTs Look Like?

As mentioned above, each ape is provably unique, scarce, and impossible to replicate. This is part of their inherent worth of being non-fungible tokens.

One can imagine that there’s a variety of outlooks, so below is a brief example of some:

What Makes the BAYC a Unique and Revolutionary NFT Collection?

Besides the provable and verifiable uniqueness of each NFT, the Bored Ape Yacht Club, as a project, is also interesting because of a few other attributes.

Right off the bat, the project launched with a detailed roadmap from the start. The relatable attributes for the Bored Apes also managed to make them perfect for online avatars and grew to become the biggest PFP project.

The number of unique owners is also quite enough for a relatively strong NFT community. In addition, owners get the rights to use the Bored Apes commercially – something that’s critical for the future development of the project.

There’s already a very strong community centered around BAYC, and it grows each day. This is also because a considerable number of celebrities have jumped on board, which brings us to our next point.

Which Celebrities Bought Bored Ape NFTs?

As CryptoPotato reported, the rap icon bought his ape for a whopping $462,000.

Other celebrities who are known to own Bored Ape NFTs include Snoop Dogg, NBA superstar Stephen Curry, Jimmy Fallon, and so forth.

BAYC’s ROI and How Much a Bored Ape Costs Today

Bored Apes are likely to be amongst the NFTs that brought the most disproportionate returns to early owners. As mentioned above, they were minted at a price of 0. 08 ETH each in April 2021.

At the time of this writing – January 2022, the floor price on OpenSea sits at 77. 99 ETH, which is a return of almost 100,000%.

While many apes sold for six and even seven figures, the most expensive one seems to be Bored Ape #3749. It sold for 740 ETH, worth around $2. 9 million at the time of the purchase. This is how it looks like:

How to Buy Bored Ape NFTs?

As mentioned above, Bored Ape NFTs were first minted at a price of 0. 08 ETH each, but that was only available for a short period of time upon the project’s launch. Now, the only way to buy them is on secondary marketplaces, and the most popular one is OpenSea.

To buy a Bored Ape NFT, you would have to visit OpenSea and connect your MetaMask wallet. Once there, find the Bored Ape Yacht Club collection in the search bar, and you can start browsing. This is how the dashboard looks like:

Mutant Apes and the Kennel Club

Beyond owning a verifiably scarce NFT, Bored Ape owners are also exposed to other benefits. More specifically, back in June 2021, the BAYC team introduced the Bored Ape Kennel Club. Bored Ape NFT owners were given the opportunity, for a limited period of one week only, to “adopt” a club dog NFT from the Bored Ape Kennel Club.

At the time, claiming the token was free and all members had to do was to pay for the gas fees. The Kennel NFTs were not put up for sale, so the only way to mint one was to own a Bored Ape NFT.

This is how the Kennels look like:

Bored Ape Yacht Club and its multibillion-dollar ApeCoin, explained

At the time of writing this guide, the Bored Ape Kennel Club collection on NFT has a floor price of 6 ETH.

But that’s not all.

Later on, in August, the team introduced another collection of 20,000 Mutant Apes in the form of the Mutant Ape Yacht Club. The drop took place on August 20th, and the community was nothing short of ecstatic.

Mutant apes were created in one of two ways: either expose a Bored Ape NFT to a special Mutant Serum or mint a Mutant Ape directly during the public sale. These are the last tier of the BAYC membership and part of the team’s Roadmap 1. The Mutant Ape Yacht Club collection on OpenSea currently has a floor price of 14. 75 ETH.

This is how they look like:

The Future of the Bored Ape Yacht Club

A large part of the project’s roadmap has already been completed, but part of the reasons for which BAYC became so popular is the constant team effort to discover new avenues.

In 2021, a very popular trend that emerged and took the market by storm was the play-to-earn phenomenon.

Speaking on the partnership was a spokesperson from Yuga Labs who said:

“We’re excited to work with Animoca Brands to grow the BAYC universe and expand the utility and benefits offered to all Bored Ape NFT holders

All in all, the project seems to be undergoing regular developments while the community is growing as ape owners have the commercial rights to their NFTs, and it’s in their best interest to constantly move forward.

RAPID GROWTH

The average weekly secondary market price for a Bored Ape has surged from around $1,500 when they were launched in April to $71,942 last week, according to NonFungible. com, a website that tracks the NFT market.

On Monday, a single Bored Ape sold for 740 ether (around $2. 9 million).

Michael Bouhanna, contemporary art specialist at Sotheby’s, said that although there is financial speculation on NFTs, he sees the Bored Apes as works of art. He said the NFT market is not a bubble.

«People were talking about a bubble in March, in June, etc, and then we see that the market is even stronger today so I think they’ve been proven wrong. I think it’s a very organic market with great collectors who have great appreciation of art,» he said.

What makes a Bored Ape valuable?

Bored Ape Yacht Club, or BAYC, is a top-selling series of NFTs owned by Yuga Labs. The NFT collection had anonymous creators until February, when BuzzFeed News reported that they were Greg Solano, a 32-year-old writer and editor, and Wylie Aronow, a 35-year-old from Florida.

It’s customary in the NFT space for creators to maintain this kind of anonymity, which raises questions about fair payment.

For instance, the BAYC creators came up with the idea of rich apes living in a swamp clubhouse, then hired freelance artists to design the apes, and partnered with two engineers, whose identities are still unknown, to launch the NFT project. Rolling Stone reported that one of the primary visual artists, who goes by the alias Seneca, had no idea they were such a big—and profitable hit—until Googling “Bored Apes” months later. Yuga CEO Nicole Muniz told BuzzFeed that each of the original five BAYC artists were “compensated over $1 million

For example, one of the rarest NFTs in the collection, Bored Ape #7495, has a dagger in its mouth, a feature that only 48 other apes have, according to the NFT marketplace OpenSea.

A non-fungible ape on the blockchain

A combination of NFT technology, eye-catching art, and some hype have propelled prices of Bored Apes into the six figures. The lowest price for a Bored Ape was about $262,630 as of Thursday, according to DappRadar, which tracks NFT prices.

Some Bored Apes have even sold for millions of dollars. In January, Bored Ape #232 sold for 1,080. 69 tokens of the Ether cryptocurrency, or about $2. 85 million at the time. From the original collection, Yuga Labs has built upon the popularity of Bored Ape Yacht Club with a newer series launched last August called Mutant Ape Yacht Club.

While he said it makes him a “little bit sick” to think about how much more he could have made, the money was still “life-changing. ” And he’s holding on to his ape.

“I’ve had my ape for nine months, and it is probably the best investment I have ever made in my life. I initially purchased it on a bit of a whim,” Head said. “I honestly don’t know if I would ever sell my Ape, even though it’s worth more money than I have ever had in fiat. It truly feels like being in a very cool club that comes with a lot of very valuable freebies and opportunities

The cheapest-available Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT for sale right now is listed at a record 152 ETH, or about $429,000. Prices are rising ahead of tomorrow’s launch of “Otherdeeds,” or expected virtual land NFTs, for the upcoming Otherside metaverse game
