The floor price for a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT—that is, the cheapest available item listed on a secondary marketplace—currently sits at $96,469, or 80 ETH, according to NFT Price Floor. Overnight, the price fell as low as $91,741, per the website’s data.

In terms of dollars, the cost of an entry-level Bored Ape NFT has dropped nearly 78% in less than two months. The floor price sat at a record high of nearly $429,000 (152 ETH) on April 29, the day before Bored Ape creator Yuga Labs launched its NFT virtual land sale for Otherside, an upcoming game. Bored Ape holders were able to claim free plots as NFTs.

In terms of ETH, the collection has seen a 47% drop since then. That’s a significant stat all the same, but it also reflects how much the falling price of Ethereum has impacted the valuations of NFT collections. The Bored Ape Yacht Club hasn’t seen a sub-$100,000 floor price since August 2021, when the collection surged alongside the wider NFT market.

Every significant NFT collection has lost a huge amount of value over the past month. When measured in USD, Bored Apes are down 54% in the last 30 days, while are down 48% in that span and the newer have shed 62% of their value.

An NFT serves as a proof of ownership to an item, and often represents digital goods such as profile pictures, illustrations, sports and entertainment collectibles, and video game items.

The NFT market saw skyrocketing demand in 2021, generating $25 billion worth of trading volume, per data from DappRadar. That demand has continued into 2022, with nearly $16 billion worth of organic trading in the first four months of the year. On May 1, leading NFT marketplace OpenSea marked its best single day of trading at $476 million

However, the fading crypto market appears to have impacted the NFT space significantly, with daily trading volume falling off a cliff in early May as crypto prices crashed. On Monday, however, with leading coins like and Ethereum reaching lows not seen since 2020, NFT trading actually climbed as buyers sought “bargains” amid depressed prices.

The Bored Ape Yacht Club is one of the best-known and most successful collections in the NFT space. The original set of 10,000 profile pictures with randomly-generated traits has thus far yielded more than $2.2 billion worth of trading volume to date, per , with subsequent collections and associated projects boosting that tally.

The project has also been a favorite of celebrities like Snoop Dogg, Jimmy Fallon, and Madonna, and spurred Yuga Labs to a $450 million funding round in March at a $4 billion valuation.

However, even the Apes aren’t immune to market challenges, and that’s showing in the rapidly declining price points lately, along with slowing trading volume. According to CryptoSlam, the original Bored Ape NFT collection has yielded nearly $96 million in trading volume over the last 30 days—down almost 72% from the previous 30-day window.

Out in the physical world, the Bored Apes are integrating themselves into fashion. Adidas launched its first NFT project, Into The Metaverse, in collaboration with several NFT brands, Bored Ape Yacht Club chief among them. Collaborations between Adidas and BAYC on both virtual and physical clothing are coming soon.

Adidas is also a member of the Bored Ape Yacht Club.

The Bored Ape Yacht Club brand has popped up in other industries too. Literally in the case of food: A pop-up restaurant in Los Angeles was recently turned into a permanent burger spot. In January, a mobile game, Apes vs. Mutants, launched on both the App Store and Google’s Play Store. (Reviews have been unkind.) Another mobile game is in production, scheduled for Q2. You might think NFTs are silly — and terrible for the environment — but don’t expect the Bored Apes to disappear anytime soon.

One of the perks of owning a Bored Ape NFT is access to the so-called bathroom which is essentially a virtual hangout place with a canvas that’s accessible only to wallets that contain at least one ape. This is where owners can draw, write expletives, or do whatever they see fit. Every ape-holder is allowed to paint a pixel on the bathroom wall every fifteen minutes. Essentially, buying an ape NFT makes the owner a member of an exclusive club that has a membership cap.

In addition, owning a high-prized NFT and one that’s recognized within a community is much like buying a valuable painting. Its value is derived from the subjective worth of what it means for the owner himself. And remember – each Bored Ape NFT is completely unique, and there will never be a second one like it.

In January the members-exclusive BAYC x MAYC mobile game was released, beginning a 10-day competition wherein the top 1,000 players will be rewarded with BAYC merchandise. The competition created a lot of buzz around BAYC and Ape Fest 2022, a four-day event kicking off June 20 in Manhattan, exclusively for BAYC holders. “The project itself will then be turned over to the community, and it will be the responsibility of the holders to shape the future of the BAYC. Perhaps this is where the celebrity holders will really pay off for the brand,” Petscher said.

While many apes sold for six and even seven figures, the most expensive one seems to be Bored Ape #3749. It sold for 740 ETH, worth around $2.9 million at the time of the purchase. This is how it looks like:

Why are the Bored Ape Yacht Club’s NFTS so expensive?

The NFTs made by the BAYC is the new sensation among celebrities. That is one of the causes of the increment in their prices.

Having a BAYC gives you status, and people like that specific recognition, especially if you belong to the upper-class circle.

«Some careers require a person to be relevant, so what better way to do that than owning the most well-known NFT in the world,» said Yehudah Petscher, a strategist at NFT data aggregator CryptoSlam.

«BAYC is cool, and everyone wants the cool thing.»

However, the real value is the membership access to the Bored Ape Yacht Club.

Mutant Apes and the Kennel Club

Beyond owning a verifiably scarce NFT, Bored Ape owners are also exposed to other benefits. More specifically, back in June 2021, the BAYC team introduced the Bored Ape Kennel Club. Bored Ape NFT owners were given the opportunity, for a limited period of one week only, to “adopt” a club dog NFT from the Bored Ape Kennel Club.

At the time, claiming the token was free and all members had to do was to pay for the gas fees. The Kennel NFTs were not put up for sale, so the only way to mint one was to own a Bored Ape NFT.

But that’s not all.

Later on, in August, the team introduced another collection of 20,000 Mutant Apes in the form of the Mutant Ape Yacht Club. The drop took place on August 20th, and the community was nothing short of ecstatic.

Mutant apes were created in one of two ways: either expose a Bored Ape NFT to a special Mutant Serum or mint a Mutant Ape directly during the public sale. These are the last tier of the BAYC membership and part of the team’s Roadmap 1.0. The Mutant Ape Yacht Club collection on OpenSea currently has a floor price of 14.75 ETH.

Wait, what are NFTs again?

The most ubiquitous criticism of NFTs is that they’re useless because pictures can simply be right-clicked and saved for free. The point of NFT technology is that it makes public who the owner of an asset is. The idea is that anyone can buy a Mona Lisa print for a few bucks, but only one person or institution can own the original. Everyone in the world can save a BAYC jpeg on their computer, but only one person can own the NFT.

Whether that makes NFTs valuable is a judgement call. Some people think they’ll revolutionize the internet, at last allowing digital goods to be bought and sold like real-world, physical products. Others think they’re an environmentally-costly ponzi scheme.

The Future of the Bored Ape Yacht Club

A large part of the project’s roadmap has already been completed, but part of the reasons for which BAYC became so popular is the constant team effort to discover new avenues.

In 2021, a very popular trend that emerged and took the market by storm was the play-to-earn phenomenon.

Speaking on the partnership was a spokesperson from Yuga Labs who said:

“We’re excited to work with Animoca Brands to grow the BAYC universe and expand the utility and benefits offered to all Bored Ape NFT holders.”

All in all, the project seems to be undergoing regular developments while the community is growing as ape owners have the commercial rights to their NFTs, and it’s in their best interest to constantly move forward.

How to buy a Bored Ape NFT?

Bored Ape buyers will need an Ethereum wallet, like MetaMask. Potential buyers can choose to either purchase at auctions or through listings that set a fixed price on NFT marketplaces.

What makes Bored Ape Yacht Club valuable?

Let’s start at the beginning. Bored Ape Yacht Club was launched last April. It took 12 hours for all 10,000 to sell out at a price of $190 (0.08 ether). The price of Bored Ape NFTs rose steadily until July, when they spiked dramatically and the collection became a blue-chip set.

What makes an NFT collection successful is highly subjective. Broadly, it’s a mix of four things: Influencer or celebrity involvement, mainstream potential, utility for members and community appeal.

The first and second are obvious. When famous people own an NFT, it makes others want to own one too. When celebrities like Jimmy Fallon and Justin Bieber bought into Bored Ape, it caused a run in sales and hype — and hype is what the NFT market is all about. People buying into BAYC today, at a steep price of over $150,000, are likely to believe that the brand could one day adorn more than celebrity social media accounts: Netflix shows, popular games and Hollywood movies are the goal.

Thirdly, utility. Most NFT projects claim to offer a utility of some sort, which means it does something other than act as a profile picture. That can be access to play-to-earn games or the option to stake an NFT in exchange for an associated cryptocurrency.

Bored Ape Yacht Club has done a few things to keep owners interested. First, it created the Bored Ape Kennel Club, offering owners the opportunity to «adopt» a dog NFT with traits that mimic those of the Bored Apes. Another freebie came in August of 2021: Digital vials of mutant serum. Owners could mix their Bored Ape with the serum to create a Mutant Ape Yacht Club NFT (see below).

The advent of this second collection last August is when the Bored Ape brand really popped. Seen as doing innovative things with NFT technology, and coinciding with a huge amount of money entering the space that month, Bored Ape Yacht Club started to be seen as the premiere NFT brand.

Both Kennel Club and Mutant Ape NFTs now sell for a lot. The Mutant Ape Yacht Club collection entry point is about $30,000, while Bored Ape Kennel Clubs are selling for about half that. (Remember, these were free to BAYC holders.)

Last but not least is the community that’s built around a collection. NFTs double as membership cards to holder groups. The more valuable people find belonging to that community, the less they’ll want to sell their NFT. Bored Ape Yacht Club has organized meetups in New York and California, and there have been Bored Ape get-togethers in Hong Kong and the UK, too. This past June, BAYC holders were treated to «Ape Fest», a festival that included performances from Eminem, Snoop Dogg, LCD Soundsystem and Amy Schumer.

But «community value» also extends to financial self interest. The higher the floor price on a collection, the more crypto-rich traders you can expect to be holders. These savvy investors trade information within locked Discord groups, providing valuable (sometimes insanely valuable) tips to one another. Sell your NFT and you’ll no longer be privvy to such tips.

Broadly speaking, there are two types of NFT art. First, you have one-off visuals that are sold as non-fungible tokens, just like paintings in real life. The third reason these NFTs are so valuable is that they’re seen as status symbols owing to their high cost of ownership. As the global Covid-19 pandemic drove accelerated digital adoption, NFTs became assets to showcase socioeconomic status.

Who Created BAYC?

The Bored Ape Yacht Club was launched by anonymous developers that go by the pseudonyms Gargamel, Gordon Goner, Emperor Tomato Ketchup, and No Sass. There’s also an entity that took responsibility for the creation of BAYC called Yuga Labs.

The story of BAYC is actually quite interesting. On April 23rd, Gordon Goner – one of the project’s creators, announced the pre-sale launch on Discord. The announcement itself was met with almost no reactions.

Only about a few hundred apes during the week and, it’s worth noting, that their owners hadn’t yet seen their NFTs and how they looked. On April 30th, the reveal happened, and once people saw the art, the collection spread like wildfire, and all apes were sold a day later at a price of 0.08ETH each. 30 apes were saved for the team members, giveaways, and promotions.
